The space

Amazing views, fresh modern interiors, peaceful natural surroundings and a huge deck with swimming pool and hot tub define this Sonoma wine country retreat near Glen Ellen. It is an extraordinarily uplifting property at any time of year, only 15-20 minutes' drive from the wineries, restaurants and farmers' markets of historic Sonoma and Glen Ellen.

Cavedale Ridge is a 10-acre hillside estate facing west, with spectacular sunsets and views across the vineyards and orchards of the Valley of the Moon to the Sonoma Mountain range, Mount Tamalpais and, in the far distance, the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge. The house is surrounded by olive and bay trees and fragrant Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and manzanita. In spring, there are blossoming fruit trees.

A unique and outstanding feature of Cavedale Ridge is a vast deck running off the Main House living area for swimming, lounging, outdoor cooking and dining, and star gazing around the over-sized firepit. To reach Cavedale Ridge, it is a 10-minute drive from the main highway up a windy and narrow road (so we discourage nervous drivers). For everyone seeking a quiet and comfortable escape near Sonoma and San Francisco, this is a very special wine country retreat.

ACCOMMODATION
The Main House and Guest House (always rented together) are distinguished by pristine, light-filled interiors with white walls, contemporary furniture and vibrant accent colors. There are three master suites, with two enjoying panoramic views of the Valley, and the third a garden view.

Main House
Walk through the front door, and you enter an airy open plan space with hallway, living room, dining area for 10, and large kitchen. The bright comfortable interior has vast picture windows with magnificent views, making it a special place to relax in any season. A custom kitchen is designed for the gourmet cook. It has a large island with gas cooktop, extensive work surfaces and a breakfast bar. There are Bosch appliances throughout, and thoughtful extras such as a Kitchen Aid and gelato maker.

Two sets of sliding folding glass doors open from the dining area onto the extensive deck, creating a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors: a huge indoor/outdoor living space with swimming pool (heated in high season) hot tub (available all year), sun loungers, firepit, and propane BBQ with food preparation surfaces. This is where lazy summer days are spent, lounging on the deck, cooking local produce, watching breath-taking sunsets, and sitting around the firepit after dark, gazing at the stars.

In spring and fall, the folding doors create a semi indoor/outdoor area where you can comfortably enjoy the fresh air, stay sheltered, and be near the BBQ, firepit and hot tub.

Upstairs in the Main House is a Master Bedroom with views across the valley, a king bed, and an ensuite bathroom with more views from its super-size bathtub and a shower. Next door is a small bedroom that can accommodate two guests: one on the twin bed and one on a roll out twin bed. This arrangement works especially well for a family with young children, who can be close to their parents next door.

The Guest Bedroom in the Main House is on the same floor as the living area. It can be made up as either a king bed or two twins. Two further guests can sleep on a double sofa bed. It has a garden view, and a bathroom next door with a bathtub with shower over. This bathroom also serves the living area. In the basement, there is a washing machine and dryer for guest use.

The Main House enjoys under-floor heating throughout, with air-conditioning in the Master Bedroom only. There are three TVs with DirectTV and one DVD in the Main House.

Guest House
The private Guest House is on a lower level, below the main deck, and is reached by a spiral staircase, or directly from the front of the property. It is a superb design-led space with the same magnificent views as the main house. The bedroom and living area are open plan, separated by a floating wall with a sleek see-through gas fire. Enjoy the fire from the king-size bed or a love seat and chaise in the living area. The ensuite bathroom has a walk-in shower and separate wc. Off the living room is a wet bar with all you need (full-size refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher, coffee machine and toaster oven) to prepare breakfast, a salad lunch, or serve drinks.
Sliding doors open onto a spacious covered wooden porch - somewhere shady for hot days, a quiet place to read away from all the poolside activity, or another spot for watching the evening sunset over cocktails. The Guest House has air-conditioning and heating and one TV with DirectTV.

Guest access

The 10 acre property in its entirety is available for guest use. However, there are two kitchen cabinets that are locked for owner's use, together with a basement area. Outside, there is a pool control room, a gardener's shed and another shed which are reserved for owner use. In addition, the on-property well and water tank machinery are reserved for owner use.

Interaction with guests

We have a professional property manager who is available throughout our guests' stay. The owner is always at the end of a telephone.

Prices include Sonoma County Transient Occupancy Tax of 9%. TOT # 1118N.

The pool is heated June through September. The hot tub is available to heat year round.

Pool service is every Thursday or Friday and should take only 20 minutes or so. Garden service is every other Thursday but should not affect either the house or the pool deck. Propane deliveries occur only when the tank needs refilling - they are difficult to predict but will not affect either the house or the pool deck.

We have security cameras covering the drive and the parking areas but not in the house or on the deck.

The house sleeps 6 + 2. There is a maximum of 8 overnight guests permitted, but, with prior written authorization, up to 4 total day guests/visitors may be allowed.

No pets or smoking.

Local rules forbid amplified music outside at any time. Likewise, drones cannot be used on or near the property as they disturb the privacy of the neighbors.

Parties are strictly prohibited by local rules.

Minimum age limit for the lead renter is 28.

Children are welcome but the house is not suitable for the very young as there is a swimming pool open to the main house, unfenced staircases and some of the terrain around the house is steep.

Quiet hours for all Sonoma County rentals are between 10pm and 7am.

Sonoma County Transient Occupancy Tax of 12% is included in the rates quoted. Tax # 1118N

Our group of 4 couples truly enjoyed our time at Norman's home on Cavedale Rd. The extra large patio was the best part. The views from atop the mountain looking down on the valley were amazing. Each morning we watched the valley floor fill with fog and then eventually burn off an hour or two later. The hot tub and pool were a morning ritual for our group. A great way to start off the day....and end it too! The gas fire pit was incredible as well. It saw use during the cool mornings and evenings. The interior of the home was wonderful too, very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is spacious, well accessorized and supplied. We hired a chef to come in and cook us a meal one night. A fantastic meal in a beautiful setting. The only things to be aware of are the drive up the mountain and the size of the 4th bedroom. It's a 2.9 mile drive up a steep,narrow and bumpy road. If you meet someone coming from the other direction it can be a bit tricky passing each other. It reminded me of some roads I have driven in the Caribbean. The 4th bedroom is more of a kids bedroom with trundle bed. It will suffice for a couple but it's not the best. These points were well noted in the description of the property. Nice house with spectacular views. Huge fire pit, spa and pool make this a place where you could spend your entire vacation. Convenient to Sonoma and Glen Ellen wineries, although the 2.5 mile narrow mountain road might be a little challenging at first for some. Guest quarters are separate and great for parents who want some privacy. Definitely a place we would revisit.

The house is amazing, the kitchen has every gadget you could want, the pool and the hot tub are lovely, especially with the panoramic view. The master is a fully functioning apartment, more of a guest house with a separate entrance. Sonoma is very close and has lots of shops and restaurants a bit further is St. Helena also lovely and much more interesting than Napa. We also spent an afternoon at Armstrong Park which was the favorite activity of everyone - teenagers and grandparents alike.

We had an incredible stay at Norman's house. The deck alone makes this place a must stay. Also, the management company that oversees the house is easy to deal with and provides many different amenities that we found very useful. We used their recommended private chef and driver and both went beyond expectations. We could not recommend this place enough.

Our stay was great. There were 8 of us, and the stay was comfortable and spacious. Check in was easy and the pool, hot tub and fire amenities were enjoyed.

Norman's home is a little slice of heaven. My husband and I recently rented his AMAZING home for four nights in May to get married. The whole house is incredible, but the master bedroom bathtub and the outdoor space make it absolutely fabulous. The hot tub was wHere we spent most of our days. We decided to runaway and get married on their porch in front of the picture-esq view. The house is located 4.5 miles uphill and has views you can only dream about. Everything was perfect! Norman's property manager, Victoria, went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and explained all the appliances of the house soon check in. She was available 24/7 which was nice when we had small questions about the home. Norman and Victoria both gave great recommendations for local activites, food and attractions. If I ever go back to Sonoma, Norman's home will be my first pick! Oh- and they had a gelato maker.!
