The space

WE HAVE BEEN VERY WELL WELCOMED BBY CLAUDIA! THE AREA IS REALLY WONDERFUL AND AUTHANTIC, WE WERE ALLOWED TO VISIT THE CATACOMB FOR FREE AND HAD GREAT VIEW FROM OUR ROOM! THE ACCOMODATION IS NOT VERY CONFOURTABLE, BUT IT'S AN EXPERIENCE THAT REALLY DESERVESTO BE LIVED, IT WAS MY FAVORITE EXPERIENCE IN SICILY !

Unfortunately for me the weather was really bad but the beauty of the surroundings views and the kindness of the people who welcomed me made me forget a bit about this inconvenience!

DO NOT BOOK!!!!!!!! I didn't stay at the convent as it was full booked, not just the date I asked for but also all dates near. I couldn't cancel on Airbnb so I sent her my IBAN number and she write Back that she'd had problems and that my bank had refused the transfer, which is quite impossibile. Now I am waiting for a check ....... in all of this I didn't get to stay in that area as after waiting for the booking to be sorted out all was full booked....

Response from Elia:

We did not have a good experience and here's why: 1) COST - The rooms are advertised as 8 Euros per night, then when you read the advert more carefully you realised that there are other additional costs that must be paid, so a double room cost me and my girlfriend 60 EUROS per night, not 8 EUROS. 2) BREAKFAST - The breakfast was awful. The worst breakfast we have ever had in our lives! So unhealthy and bad. Cold coffee, no tea, no fruit, no cereal, no yoghurt, no fresh juice - just cold french toast with no butter or margarine, just sugary conserve spread or sugary chocolate spread. So what if you don't like sugar or are diabetic? We weren't even given a plate!!! So was very difficult to spread chocolate on the french toast which broke and crumbled onto the table! All you are given is some tissues to eat of the table like some animal!! This was so bad and very depressing. We paid 60 EUROS per night for a double room with breakfast. What a joke. We eat in the village after this. 3) Accommodation - The building and rooms smell. It feels like a hostel. Not plants, very cold and empty. A bit dark and scary at night. I know it's an old place but they should make some effort to make the rooms smell nicer. The rooms are clean and reasonably quiet, we were kept awake by a neighbour coughing and talking all night. The rooms and bed are clean. The beds not that comfortable. The double is just two singles put together so you can feel the gap in the middle. 4) - Hosts - the hosts are nice. Summary - The building and village of Savoca is beautiful and stunning, a must see whit out a doubt, but we do not recommend you stay at this place for 60 Euros a night, you can find much better elsewhere and visit this place if you want anyway as it's open to the public. For what we experienced, 8 EUROS per night would be a more reasonable price to pay.

Savoca is up the hill and you certainly need a car to get there. We were very welcomed by the hostess and shown our "room" which had 2 single beds put together and a bathroom en suite. Very cosy. Lovely view down to the sea, valley and Etna from our room. There were a couple of spots one could sit in outside in the sun. We were unable to make any tea and had expected to be able to use the kitchen to do so, this was a disappointment. We stayed 2 nights, and it was fortunate that a church group came to stay one of the nights as it meant that we could have an evening meal and a lunch - both of which were excellent Sicilian food. However, if we had been the only guests then there would be no meal other then breakfast. In communication prior to the booking I was told that we could order an evening meal, but this is not the case unless there is a group staying. There are a few restaurants one can eat in Savoca. The Couvent has a chapel and a meditation room, and this is a peaceful place one can sit and reflect, pray and meditate. Also there are the `mummies` to see in the crypt - so that is very interesting too although we were disappointed that they were no longer standing up!! The village of Savoca is well known for its scenes in the film"The Godfather". During our stay in Savoca there was a Guitar Festival in one of the Churches and it was a real pleasure to hear the music - on one night there was guitar and mandolin trio playing. There are a number of Baroque and medieval churches and even earlier churches to be seen in the area but you do need to be very confident driving up and down the hills!

Very friendly. Very clean. Great value for money. Highly recommended. However is at the top of a steep hill and mosquitos are a killer in the evening. So if you have problems walking or are susceptible to mozzy bites then be aware.

Voyageurs responsables, bonjour,
