Location

Lancaster, California, United States

🌵 The high desert refers to an area located on the western edge of the Mojave Desert, 2661 feet above sea level, also known as Antelope Valley or "the AV".

Locations used in movies, commercials and music videos 🎶 are scattered all over the valley. El Mirage Dry Lakebed wins the award for most used film location of all time.

Just up the road is Saddleback Butte State Park with the highest point in the Antelope Valley at 3,651 feet. Public campgrounds are situated at the base of the Mountain.

💀 The lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet below sea level is in Death Valley. A couple hours drive.

🐦 Rich in bird life. Many migratory species, and a few permanent residents: golden eagles, hawks, ravens, and owls, and some smaller birds such as rock and cactus wrens, thrashers, blackbirds, horned larks, ladderbacked woodpeckers, sparrows, finches, and loggerhead shrikes. (don't worry, i haven't actually seen all these birds. just read about it. see a lot of doves in my backyard but no mention of them.)

☼ Summer evenings are peaceful with warm breezes and clear skies.

🍁 Autumn is very refreshing as temperatures can very dramatically and change rather suddenly.

❄️ Frost and sub-freezing temperatures are common during winter, with occasional snow.

🌱 Springtime wildflowers are apt to put on a beautiful display of color.

Now the nitty gritty:

This niche of the Mojave desert is called Lake Los Angeles. There is no lake here. Yes, we are technically in Los Angeles County.

Way back when it was called "Los Angeles Buttes", movie companies would come out here and fill up a ditch with water to film their scenes "at the lake". It was quite scenic.

In the seventies, real estate agents turned it into a desert getaway with a permanent lake and the new name. The movie companies still shoot here all the time but not for any lake.

There is another man-made lake not too far from here, closer to Victorville and they complain about the bugs.

Many streets in the neighborhood are named after shows that where shot here: Mackennas Gold, Rawhide, Stagecoach, Wells Fargo, Jubilee Trail, High Chaparral, Chuka.

Along with the typical dirt bikes, golf carts and dune buggies, you could see locals on horseback and horse drawn carriages.

🌠 You can sit in the front yard during the evening and watch the planets go by. 🔭Telescope not included nor required.

🎭 Lake Los Angeles will remain the most isolated community in Los Angeles County for a long time.

😀Have a nice day.
