The space

Our family home is designed around a ramp (for our daughter who is a wheelchair user). We finished building it in 2012, and have been enjoying living in it for just over three years. We are in Portobello, which is a lovely seaside town on the edge of Edinburgh.
Our house is lovely and sunny throughout the day, open plan but with lots of smaller spaces off the ramp, which give privacy. We have designed it with lots of glass and doors which open onto the garden. We have won an architectural award for it, and we find it a really lovely house to live in, and hope that you will too. It now has a large Hydrospa in the garden with 4 seats and one chaise longer, and a range of different bubble settings, a wonderfully tranquil place to relax at the end of the day.
The ramp is a European 1:8, which means it is suitable for families with children who are wheelchair users and have parents who can push them, or for wheelchair users who have strong upper bodies. We have two friendly but independent cats, with their own cat flap, so they come and go, but it would be great if you are happy to feed them.
Portobello is a lovely, friendly community 15 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh. It has its own high street with butcher, baker, fishmonger, deli, health food shop, and lots of cafes. It is also 2 minutes walk from the sea, with a fantastic beach, and a sociable promenade to stroll along. The centre of Edinburgh is easy to get into by bus, and can be cycled in about 35 minutes. it is an impressive city, with lots of cultural activity, including the Festival and the Fringe. The stunning Scottish Highlands are easily reached from this base.

Thea's house is in a great spot, right in the centre of Portobello and easily accessible from the city either by bus or taxi (which cost around £12 from the train station). It's just a few minutes walk to the sea where there are some lovely cafes and a good fun amusement arcade for entertaining everyone on a chilly day. The house itself is really interesting and unusual and full of artwork and books-it is clearly a family home which adds to its charm. We loved the light and openness and having 2 gorgeous cats for an occasional cuddle was an added bonus. We only used the hot tub one evening as we were at the Fringe for a lot of our stay, but everyone enjoyed their dip under the stars. We didn't meet Thea or her family but it didn't matter as all the information we needed was there and she was very easy to contact and quick to respond when we did send her messages.

The Ramp House is an ingenious piece of architecture - but more than that it is a warm, comfortable, family home. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent there, Thea is a gracious and accommodating host and took care to ensure we had all the info and support we needed.

Had a great stay at the Ramp house with my family. Loved the lay-out of the house and the amount of windows which make the house very light and lets the sun in during the day on unexpected places (when ofcourse the sun shines). And the ramp is a great way of moving around and connecting all the spaces. And petting and taking care of the two fluffy cats made us feel (EMAIL HIDDEN)munication with Thea was easy, the tips for shops, restaurants etc very useful. Would definitely return.

The house was like something from Grand designs fantastically thought out. Unfortunately with my sons behavioural issues it wasn't quite suited to our needs. Thea was a wonderful host and very warm and welcoming.

The Ramp House is a wonderful space - the design offers many different, and beguiling, vistas. Despite being surrounded by other buildings there’s plenty of birdsong and sunshine, and the beach is just a couple of minutes away. We love airbnb, and are hosts ourselves: so I’m hesitating in providing some comments that are intended as information for future guests rather than criticisms. We did have a few challenges with the facilities; Thea had explained that the toilet and shower did not have disability supports, but the overall layout of the wet-room was quite difficult for my 95 year old chair bound mum with me acting as carer. Each person coming will have their own needs, so it will be fine for some and not ideal for others.

Me and my family of 5 had a great stay at Theas house. The house is great - well-designed and just as advertised. Communication with Thea was uncomplicated and easy. The guides provided for the house and Portobello were very useful. Most of my thoughts have already been written by Elizabeth so see below for more info. I highly recommend renting from Thea!

Amazing house, amazing hosts. Very nice people, then was lovely, the house was immaculate, we weren't bothered, pestered or plagued with rules and regulations, we felt right at home, and were made very welcome. We will definitely be back in the future. Right next to the sea, lovely high street with lots of different resteraunts, quiet street, private garden, hot tub was PHENOMINAL too! Thankyou for letting us into your home, it was a privelage to share a small aspect of your world xxx

We live in Portobello, which is the seaside part of Edinburgh. We love travelling in Europe and know the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France well, and will be travelling to Copenhagen this summer. We are happy for people to come and enjoy living in our house, and to enjoy the friendly community of Portobello, and the beautiful city of Edinburgh. We are both architects (currently building our own barrier-free family home) and love good design and good architecture. I am writing a blog about building our home which will also tell you more about us as a family:
