The space

This quaint 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom historic cottage is only 100 yards from the ocean and near the intercoastal waterway. With ample decks (20' x 30' connected to 20' x 10') surrounding it, this cottage has 6000 sq. ft. of private property. The interior has old southern heartwood pine on the walls. It was part of a group of houses built in the 1930's in this area of Vilano Beach. Originally a fishing village, the area was constructed by an aviator named Reiss, a colleague of Charles Lindbergh and founder of the St. Augustine airport. Used by military families during WWII (a German spy occupied one of these cottages), it later became a motel called the Pagoda.
Enjoy the sounds of gentle breezes blowing in the palm trees outside your window, and the surf rolling up on the beach. You'll love the natural beauty of the still-unspoiled area of North Florida. You can walk along a peaceful, uncrowded beach and just relax, or pick one of the many activities nearby: para sailing, deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, boating, cycling, bird-watching, hiking or golf. St. Augustine is only two miles away, Jacksonville 45 minutes away, and Orlando is a two-hour drive.
Vilano Center is 2 blocks away, which has been restored to its original Art Deco style. There is a major grocery store, several restaurants and a fishing pier. There are regular concerts at the pavilion.
Guana State Park is 8 miles north of us on A1A. The old town is 2 miles away, and has retained its original architecture from the 1600s. There are many fine galleries, and an art walk the first Friday evening of each month. There is a large farmer's market on Sat. morning on St. Augustine Beach.
National Geographic selected St. Augustine as one of the most beautiful cities during the holidays when there are a million lights illuminating the city beginning Nov. 17 through Jan. 31.

The cottage was very well appointed, cozy and perfect for my wife and two very small children (2 year old and 11months old). The cottage was really nicely decorated and very comfortable- it was fenced in, private and included a very large yard, hammocks in shade and surrounded with decking. The decking boards are in their final stages of life and should be upgraded soon - the pictures show new treated lumber, not the case, but not a huge deal - we just worried about splinters in my little kids! The walk to the beach was only a few minutes and it was lovely! Unfortunately there was construction everyday and we were asked to leave the beach once, but this was unusual construction that otherwise does not occur - it was a large project in the aftermath of the recent hurricane. The grill worked nicely and the home was very comfortable - the ceiling fans and AC worked wonderfully when necessary. There definitely is significant noise from the highway right out front but we anticipated that from an earlier post and it was no issue falling asleep at night, loud during the day but not when you threw on some tunes, I brought my Bluetooth portable stereo and enjoyed it on the deck daily. A couple palmetto bugs made it inside over the week but that wasn't a big deal. Overall, my wife and I were very pleased - Jackie is very quick to respond to any questions and the caretaker Stacey was a sweetheart and had the place in great shape. It suited our needs perfectly and was very kid friendly, comfortable and close to the beach. It is noisy during the day and the decking is very weathered but serviceable. A washing machine would be nice, but we packed light and did laundry in the sink and hung out to dry on the clothes line. I would stay again for sure and am pleased with our experience.

We were welcomed by the lady that cleans and she was very nice and helpful. We liked that it was very private and we had a key to the place. Enjoyed that it was so close to the beach and still a short drive to great restaurants and St Augustine. Very comfortable and well supplied with good linens.

Jackie is very nice and the cottage funky and fit our style. Since we cook we found lack of some basics a small issue but we made do. Same for outdoor plastic chairs and lack of beach chairs. My big and only complaint is that the cottage is located on A1A and it is noisy. Yes the cottages (there are a number grouped) as Jackie explains, are all close to the beach but this cottage is right on A1A behind the fence as seen on the site. I did not know and feel future visitors' might want to know. We came too far to listen to traffic. For us a bad fit.

Response from Jacqueline:
Glad to hear that you felt that the cottage fit your style! Sorry you couldn't find the beach chairs. I always advise renters to feel free to call me if they have any questions and I've always accommodated peoples' needs. Other reviews indicate that renters find the kitchen to be well stocked, and that the cottage is in a convenient location. In 12 years of renting the cottage I've never had a complaint about noise. I send a map to everyone who rents which shows the location. I'm sorry you weren't happy with that part of your stay. It sounds like you enjoyed st augustine as do the many families that return to our cottage every year!

Jackie was very helpful with our questions in advance of our arrival and the cottage is well equipped and comfortable. After we arrived, she called to make sure everything was OK. We would certainly recommend her.

Tastefully decorated (rare for a beachside rental) and incredibly convenient! It's just a few houses away from a part of the beach you can't drive on (definite plus), a block away from the grocery store and a few restaurants, a couple of miles from downtown St. Augustine, etc, etc. The house is clean, comfortable, has a large deck for soaking up the sun, and fully stocked kitchen. Jackie was very easy to communicate with, called to check on me, and even made sure she had the internet installed before I showed up. Overall a very pleasant experience!

I'm an artist, originally from Boston, organic gardener, and believe in sustainable living. We have 20 chickens that lay beautiful eggs! Also have a cottage for rent in St. Augustine, FL where we lived for 3 years.
