Treargel is the Cornish name for a home of retreat. Treargel can be found at Hendersick Barn, Portlooe, near Looe, Cornwall, UK. Treargel provides accommodation and hospitality for people needing or wishing to get away from daily life, as well as an opportunity to re-engage with creation for a while. It is in a beautiful and peaceful setting which assists the restoration of mind, body and soul.

The space

The Byre is a self contained barn which is part of Hendersick Farm, a group of residential barns. We think is a gorgeous place to live and thus to stay. You may be woken by sheep and birds but probably not much else. The property consists of 2 bedrooms (one double and one cabin room with hand made bunks THE CABIN BUNKS ARE ONLY SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN sized 170cm x 70cm), a bathroom and a large open plan lounge kitchen diner. It has electric heaters as well as a wood burning fire. Outside there is a patio with uninterrupted views of the fields going down to the coast as well as a patio area below.

Guest access

The Byre comes with its own parking space and a balcony and patio area. The path to the coastal path is at the end of the farm track. We measured it and it is around 1 km from the front door to the South West Coastal Path. Access is all hours and will be arranged prior to arrival.

Interaction with guests

We live at the Barn and our housekeeper Jane will be available during your stay. Retreat services are offered and can be arranged at additional cost in consultation with us.

Other things to note

It is quite hilly. The beach is about a ten min walk down the hill but takes around 30 mins to get back up. It takes us about 35-40 minutes to walk into Looe, a bit longer to Polperro. The closest pub is a mile away but it is a 35 min walk along the lanes and a long journey back.

Weather: Cornish weather is unpredictable – it is suggested that you bring all weather gear and layers.

Proximity to civilisation: We are about one mile down and uphill to the closest shop. There are none within easy walking distance so if you are self-catering you may wish to shop before you arrive/on the way or arrange for a food delivery to The Barn for the day of your arrival.

The Byre has a hairdryer and superfast broadband wifi with a smart TV (netflix, BBC iplayer etc).

Towels and Bedding: are provided

As we are running Treargel as a retreat, it will more suit those who need some space and time out rather than anyone wishing for a wild time!

A lovely cosy cottage close by to some beautiful small quiet beaches and walks. Everything you need for a quiet get away in Cornwall. Well situated to make day trips to a wide area of Cornwall.

Lovely lovely place to stay! We had a long weekend at The Byre and it was perfect for us. Clean, tidy, a lovely welcome hamper and great location if you're looking for something a bit further out from Looe centre. The coastal walks were really easy to get to from the accommodation and it wasn't much of a walk to Looe for shops and food. Clare was a lovely host and happy to help with anything and we will definitely be returning soon!

WOW!!! What a holiday and what a great cottage. Communication with Clare was fantastic and we were really well looked after by her house sitters on arrival and they were always on hand if we needed anything. I have already enquired about booking again for next year and look forward to recommending to my friends and family.

Nice accommodation with everything we needed in a lovely peaceful location within easy reach of visiting Looe, Polperro, Eden Project and Talland Bay itself. Thank you for the treats awaiting our arrival; the first cream tea of our hols.

A great location and views that are unbeatable on a nice day. Well positioned for both Looe and Polperro which are both beautiful and within walking distance down the coastal routes with some great views. The cottage has everything you could need. We also visited Port Isaac, Lost gardens of Helligan and Fowey which are all within an hours drive.

We received a very warm welcome from Clare with homemade scons, clotted-cream and marmelade. And additionally a welcome package of seasonal goodies. Was great as we didn't have to go shopping for the next breakfast! The Byre is very comfortable and well equipped - noting is missing. For older kids the beds are a little bit small, but the sofa is very comfortable so sleeping is possible there as well. As the Hendersick Barn is a retreat area, it's very quiet and the boys sometimes felt that they were not allowed to go outside. The Looe area is beautiful and as well Looe and Polperro can easily be accessed by walk. The almost home beach (Portnadler Beach) is at walking distance too (arounc 15 min) and very nice. The Byre is really very recommendable if you need a relaxing and recreative holidays.

Artie, my husband, and I moved to Looe from Melbourne in 2015. Our vision for Treargel Retreats is to provide a place of retreat for those in full or part time Christian ministry, and more generally for those who care for others, with little time or resource to take time out for themselves. Treargel is open to those of all faiths and none.
