The Lighthouse is a unique, romantic place on the South Coast. Stunning views, opposite a swimming and dog beach plus rock pools, it’s great for walks. With a comfy double bed and steep stairs, it’s private and quiet - brilliant on a sunny day, cosy in a storm. There's a fantastic cafe around the corner; shops are 10 minutes’ walk away. The main Island Bay bus stop is nearby with regular buses. It's a 9 minute drive to the airport and 15 minutes to downtown Wellington. Small dogs on request.

The space
The lighthouse is a relaxing, romantic and cosy place to stay. It is small with narrow steep stairs and a little bathroom to navigate. The view from the top floor is magical and ever-changing. There are many coastal and ridge line tracks to enjoy, plus a swimming beach immediately across the road. It is quiet and peaceful.

It was originally built by the former owner as an art studio for his wife and was never actually a lighthouse; however it does have an original lighthouse light on its upper floor. We recently (we’re taking over in April 2024) bought the lighthouse from the original owner Bruce and will continue running it as accommodation as well as a special retreat for us to enjoy too! Unfortunately we lose all the wonderful reviews Bruce generated over nearly 30 years, but we look forward to creating our own by sharing this little piece of paradise with you.

Other things to note
While there is a dog beach immediately across the road, there is no fenced or secure outdoor area for a dog. A big, old or nervous dog may struggle with the stairs. You can park right outside in free, on street parking. There are always parks available as there are not many houses nearby. The bedroom does not have curtains/blinds so bring an eye mask for moon-lit nights if you’re light sensitive. There are heaters, warm bedding and an electric blanket for winter nights.

Island Bay has a wonderful village atmosphere with parks, cafes, a movie theatre and a supermarket. Everything is walking distance or there are regular buses. It’s near the surf beaches of Lyall Bay (great for beginners - surf lessons available) and Houghton Bay (dolphins often visit!), plus local pubs and a brewery or two in the area - several dog friendly venues. The Taputeranga Marine Reserve stretches in front of the lighthouse with a snorkel trail (but the water is cold year round!). There are boat ramps nearby and fishing spots beyond the reserve.
