This windmill is located at the edge of the small agricultural town Neapolis. It has been sensitively converted into a home. The mechanisms are all intact in the space which is compact and cosy. There are two balconies and a stone staircase to a large garden. There are many popular and also wild beaches within 20 minutes’ drive through beautiful countryside. Crete forms a significant part of the cultural heritage of Greece and so there are many places of interest in the Neapolis Lasithi area.

The space

The windmill is on two floors totalling 51 sq. metres. There is a 150 sq. metre garden. This mill is small but perfectly functional and comfortably accommodates two people. The two single beds lock together to make a double bed. There is a double sofa bed for other guests in the living area downstairs. Please note the sofa bed needs to be closed during the day to make space.

There are places designed for all necessary activities. Cooking, breakfasting and dining, sofa slouching and sofa sleeping, laptop use with a large monitor for wide screen. There is a spiral staircase. Upstairs the double bed can be easily separated to make two single beds or sofas. The two balconies have enough space for dining with stone stairs outside down to the garden and bathroom. The view is of the town streets combined with mountains and hills.

Guest access

There are many beaches within 20 minutes drive. The village and beach Plaka and the island of Spinalonga are great places to visit. Another beach village Elounda is just along the coast from Plaka where one can cross over the sea causeway to rocky private coves and family beaches.

In the direction of Vlichadia there are many wild beaches where one can be alone. Swimming with turtles and shoals of fish make excellent company for the nature seekers.

There are many hiking trails and gorges to explore. Also organised walks are available with our Poppy Season sightseeing tours.

Other things to note

Windmill History
The windmill was in fact a gristmill or flour mill. In the past the gristmill turned grain into flour. The millstones themselves turned at around 120 rpm and were laid one on top of the other. The bottom stone, called the bed was fixed to the floor, while the top stone, the runner, was mounted on a separate spindle, driven by the main shaft which is still intact. A wheel called the stone nut connected the runner's spindle to the main shaft. The distance between the stones could be varied to produce the grade of flour required; moving the stones closer together produces finer flour.

I will meet you outside the large church in Neapolis.

The windmill is the perfect place to stay for who is looking for a simple but unique and special accommodation. It is furnished in a good and functional manner, but cosy and stylish at the same time. In the kitchen, Poppy welcomed us with fresh fruits and basics for preparing breakfast and dinner. The bedroom upstairs features a swing (inside!) and a mini-balcony with a beautiful view to the mountains and the valley. From there, outside-stairs take you down into the beautiful garden and to the small but sufficient bathroom. Neapoli is a nice little town, not overcrowded by tourists and a perfect "home-base" for exploring the Lasithi-area of Crete (mountains, beaches, villages...). We were lucky to be around during a local festival (mid-August): on three nights, Greek musicians played concerts in some of the city's smaller squares. The street of the windmill is quiet, neighbours are friendly locals. A car is very recommendable to get around. Poppy is a really hearty person, ready to help and assist with recommendations about the area, food, anything regarding the accommodation and anything else that might come up. If you’re looking for a temporary home in Eastern Crete the windmill is made for you!

The windmill is an absolutely unique and beautiful property. It is set in a working town, so it provides a very authentic experience if you want to experience the day-to-day of the local people in Crete (not overcrowded tourist traps). The neighbours are lovely. With a car it is extremely easy to journey to other locations - the sea, the mountains, etc. Parking is adjacent. The windmill has been restored and converted with much care and imagination. We stayed as a couple for two people it is the perfect miniature romantic holiday home! It's compact but you have everything you need to be totally self sufficient. The garden is gorgeous, we ate there most evenings. If you like glamping, eco-toursim, or just staying in unusual quirky properties this Airbnb rental is a good choice. Poppy the host could not be more helpful too - she was always on call. We could not have asked for more ... we had a fab holiday here!

This is the most gorgeous and quirky property - perfect for a romantic getaway. Poppy met us in the centre of Neapoli as arranged, and drove us the short distance to the mill. She made us feel very welcome and was available to for advice throughout our trip. Neapolis itself is a quiet, pretty working town, with regular buses to and from the airport and along the coast. I would love to return and stay in this property again.

Response from Julienne Poppy:
I couldn't agree more, gorgeous and quirky indeed! I am glad you appreciated Neapolis, it is an authentic working town that does not have (very welcome) tourists needs at its centre. The windmill is a famous landmark now that we have restored it.

The windmill is like a fairy castle! It was very interesting experiencing a windmill as a home. The conversion is skilfully done and so all home comforts function beautifully. The garden is also lovely. Having Neapolis on the doorstep as it were is very convenient as you don't have to get in your hire car for every little need. There are few (other) tourists in the town which is small and great to walk around and hang out with the Greeks in the many "Kafeneio". Neapolis is well situated as it was only a short drive to beaches, monasteries and archaeological sites. Poppy is a perfect host, she looked after us very well by explaining all we needed to know as well as being a fantastic local guide (Poppy Season Crete). We recommend Poppy, the Windmill and Neapolis very highly.

Yes I definitely recommend staying in a windmill! Sleeping inside an ancient flour production building was a very unique experience. The mill is utterly charming with a good sense of space despite its size. The garden has sun and shade and it was great having a private outside space in a town. Neapolis is more like a large village. There are many very good places to eat. We also recommend making use of the bus services. Poppy is very friendly and she showed us where all the nearby important sites were which we whizzed around due to not wanting to swim in the sea in April. We will come back for sure four days was not enough!

I have run my own café/restaurant for eight years. It was situated on the busy Eluonda causeway and was frequented by tourists and Greeks alike. The café is famous for its authentic Greek atmosphere where many local musicians went to play.

I am from Fourni village and I lived in Munich Germany with my German husband for ten years. I consequently speak English and German fluently. I have now passed on my café and wish to work in the tourist industry with the Poppy Season project organising tourist buddy tours with my Airbnb guests.

My life motto is:
Live everyday as if it were your last.

Five things I cannot live without:
My family life.
The countryside and the beauty of nature.
Music, especially reggae, traditional Greek and rock.
Companionship with close friends.

Favourite travel destinations:
India, Peru, Africa.

Favourite Authors:
Nikos Kazantzakis
Tasos Livaditis
