Gay Ellen was very responsive and helpful during booking and prior to my arrival. Once I arrived, I met the the onsite manager, Alex, who was so kind and friendly. He drove me around to show me the town and invited me out to dinner with him on my second night. He even drove me to…

Everything was perfect for me. The host on duty met me at the door , and got me all settled in. I arrived late and left fairly early. The shower was great and the bed comfy. The neighborhood was quiet as well

Upon entering this listing, the first thing that hits you is the smell; an old smell like you would experience at Value Village or a senior living center. Alex was the person who checked us in. He must have been tired as I wouldn't call our greeting enthusiastic. More like t…

Response from Gay Ellen:
While I am sorry to see that Josh was so disappointed in our hostel, his review suggests to me that he may not recall that his near-adult son broke the back door handle, the screen door, and one of the dining chairs the first night, when night staff discovered him obviously drunk and consuming vodka out of a water bottle. The next morning the son quite overtly helped himself to food belonging to other guests, clearly labeled. I discussed with my host staff whether we should allow them to stay, and we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt since the parents themselves seemed respectful. We reminded them of the house rules including no alcohol, and suggested they keep a closer eye on their son. That proved to be a mistake on our part. I had not wanted to give either Josh or Vera a poor review since they personally did not cause problems, but perhaps it is unfair to future hosts not to address the issue of the ill behaved and inadequately supervised son. If the son had been there alone he would have been asked to leave the first night. It is true that there was a trench across the back yard dug the day before their arrival, in order to upgrade the electric service to the tree house, and we did halt work for a few days in order to accommodate guests staying in the tree house. Josh does a good deal of guessing in his review. I am guessing he did not look at the photos or description of our tree house prior to reserving, and I am glad he took my suggestion that he and his family would be more comfortable in the main house.

The hostel was comfortable, clean, and with a colorful mix of travelers. Communication and check in were easy and painless. Would definitely stay again when in Fairbanks next.

We created a small hostel in Fairbanks because that's our favorite type of lodging when we travel! Economical and more social than traditional hotel/motel style.
