We were an intergenerational group of five ranging from 39 to 80 years old. We had a wonderful welcome from our hosts. The fridge was full of drinks along with yogurts and fruits. When they realized we were hungry, they drove us to the best restaurant in town, which also is in family hands. The family is very communicative and they made it easy to organize our arrival and late departure. We occupied three rooms. We used their kitchenette to prepare fruit and coffee in the morning and enjoyed the patio during the heat of the day. Their neighbor Manuelita (who is also the caretaker/cleaner of the property) was also very helpful with finding take out dining options and helping us out with any need we had. All in all a wonderful stay.

Izamal is a charming Mexican town, dotted by ancient Maya pyramids, with a large Franciscan monastic establishment atop one of them right at the main plaza. Three colleagues and I rented the Casa de Balam for a week while attending a conference in Izamal, and we were very happy with our choice. We were also very glad that we had rented a car both to get around town and also to get out of town, as well as a way to make our lives a little easier in both the heat and the rain. Parking is secure at the Casa, and it’s easy to find parking almost anywhere you would go in town Izamal is equidistant between Merida and Chichen Itza. The house will come stocked with basic breakfast foods, but a visitor would do well to acquire some additional supplies before arriving in town, although there is a very good fruit and vegetable store two + blocks from the Casa. There is also a big chain store, Aurrera, in town. The Casa Jaguar is beautifully designed, and less than a decade old, with lovely materials used for bathrooms, etc. The largest part of the Casa is a big studio apartment, with a kitchenette on one side, and comfortable seating for four in addition to the 2 double beds. This is a pleasant place to gather, and it is the location of the WIFI signal. The two other rooms are completely independent, each with a double and single bed, a private bath, and independent air conditioning control. Another kitchen has two burners for actually cooking; we barely used it, since serious cooking at the Casa is not easy. Assembling breakfast and snacks is the way to go. The swimming pool is deliciously chilly and refreshing! From the patio one catches a glimpse of what may be the largest pyramid of the city. This house would be great for a large family or for up to 3 couples. The Azcorra family is attentive to any need at the Casa. This is their own house, and they take very good care of it! We were pleasantly surprised to find that our sheets and towels were changed half-way through our stay of 8 days. We have asked them to make up useful lists regarding restaurants, shopping, taxi #s, et cetera. While we were there, the family discovered other items that would improve the accommodation, including a dish drainer. They kindly provided amenities, from sufficient clothes hangers to hair dryer, that were not on the checklist. We warmly recommend the Casa Jaguar!
