Welcome to the Sanctuary For Strays, home to all who wander! The roomy art-filled suite is the entire upstairs of our colorful 1924 home with half bath, skylights, Persian rugs, painted furniture, reading nook & big desk w.wifi. Downstairs a shared kitchen & outside an urban oasis garden. Our NoPo location is foodie heaven, near Mississippi & Alberta Arts district. Public transport & parking is a snap. We also offer the Garden Sanctuary For Strays APT if you'd prefer your own private place.
The minute you walk through the gate of my colorful 1920's bungalow in the heart of North Portland, you'll leave the day behind you and step into a whole different world.
My sophisticated and secret urban garden, featured in many magazines, is filled with botanical treasures, secret spaces and amazing fountains, with lots of room to sit, sleep, wi-fi or kick back with a drink.
Once through the lime green front door, you'll find works by NW artists, a gorgeous, light-filled kitchen nook and a posse of four-legged friends: Milo the blonde ball boy and Zoe Mae, the world's only vacuum cleaner with a tail. This is a home where animals rule!
Milo will take you upstairs to your big and colorful skylight suite with its own big desk, reading nook and half-bathroom. The shared shower is downstairs. Note: the flight of stairs are steeper than average. The vegetarian-only kitchen can be made available on request and for guests staying four or more nights, we'll do your laundry, no charge. All you need to bring is your curiosity about this fabulous, open-hearted city and a respect for all living things, great and small.
If you're looking for your independence but feel grounded by animals, great art and gardens, come stay with us. And if you're traveling alone, we're your place; singles get a price break.
Our tree-lined neighborhood is easy walking to buses and MAX, morning-to-night coffee shops (my fave is Coffee House 5), restaurants, groceries and a gorgeous European-style park. We're right in-between the Alberta Arts District and historic Mississippi Ave, both filled with all the best micro-everything Portland has to offer.
Finally, this: if you're vegan, the beer and wine in the fridge is on us!
You are most welcome to turn on the garden fountain, sit on rocking chairs or pull out the lounger and zone out for hours. The kitchen is steps away where you can stash your preferred brew. If you need an evening at home, the big screen TV room loaded with Netflix, HBO, etc. is yours for the asking. Other than sharing the downstairs shower, it's entirely up to you how visible/invisible you'd like to be.
Interaction with guests
The dogs and I are often around and available, but I'm all about privacy - yours and mine. I cannot vouch for the irrepressible Milo who will try his hardest to impress you with his stuffed toys. Zoe Mae, however, now almost 17, will keep a more mature distance.
Other things to note
All the products in my home are cruelty-free, from shampoo to cleaning supplies. I take animal welfare pretty seriously; so do my animals!
$20/night for each additional guest refers to dogs, children and adults. Do know that 3 adults is a bit of a crunch but we can talk. You are most welcome to cook here as long as it's vegetarian. Thanks, too, for not putting on perfume or strong aftershave inside. And since the animals and I wake early, pls give me the heads up if you're planning on coming in later than 11pm. Those are the big ticket items, we can negotiate the rest!
