Guests often search for this popular amenity
This tiny, delightful rustic cabin, furnished with heirlooms, is hidden away in the olive grove, with a lovely rural feel. One room, very private. Composting toilet behind the cabin. Outdoor shower and wi-fi access are at the house about 60 meters away. Amenities in the house, such as TV, are available to guests, when the house is not booked out by other guests. Kitchen can be used by cabin guests, in negotiation with other guests.

The space
The cabin, although only about 12 years old, looks like a flashback to our forebears. It is insulated and cosy but no additional heat --except a hot water bottle. There is a simple solar powered light. All other services, are in the main house. Furnishings are about 100 years old apart from a new mattress on my grandmother's double bed.

Where you’ll be

Carterton, Wellington, New Zealand

My homestay is in the country with only cows, sheep and deer for neighbours. But close by are great tramps, one with a long swing bridge, interesting geological formations and light houses on the east coast, a bird sanctuary, a vintage air craft museum, lovely restaurants, wineries, outdoor adventures and boutique shopping. I can meet trampers, for a $25 fee, coming from a tramp in the Tararuas and take them to the train the next day.

I was raised on a dairy farm in the US and after work in Europe, the Carribean and travel, I married a man I met when in New Zealand on an exchange programme and we moved to Canada. We settled in NZ in 1974. After raising a family and a career in several NGOs and the public sector, I bought land in the heart of dairy country in the Wairarapa and planted an olive grove. I have a beautiful site which I love and continue to work on almost daily. I really enjoy sharing it with family, friends and homestay guests. It is my goal to make my guests feel like my personal guests. I have been lucky and travelled to many places so I feel I can make people from varied cultures feel welcome. We travel for fun and I try to contribute to my guests' fun. I confess to being a bit gregarious! And hungry for new experiences and meeting new people.

During your stay

I consider each guest my personal guest and I usually join them for breakfast. I try not only to enjoy their company but assist them with finding services or places of interest in the Wairarapa. I was born in the US and have lived in Canada, Latin America and Europe before moving to NZ over 40 years ago. I particularly enjoy guests from other countries. If I am not staying in the house, I will be close by and always available by phone.
