The space

Te Papa eco cottage is a unique place to relax, unwind and watch the natural world criuse past. It is a large one room cottage, beautifully furnished with antique chairs by a cosy wood fire, original art and a luxurious King size bed, with views over the Waikato River and the Onewhero ranges.
The cottage is off the grid, but has enough power obtained through solar energy to run lights, a fridge and ports to charge your devices [good cell phone coverage for internet connection but no independant link] Cooking is done on a gas hob [no oven] and the kitchen is kitted out with high quality utensils. There is also a BBQ for out door cooking.
After a hard day relaxing, you can enjoy a hot shower in the spacious bathroom or a soak in the outdoor bath with views over the river and the surrounding farm land [soft towels, bathrobes, shampoo, conditioner and bubble bath provided]. The bath, with hot running water is set amongst the reeds on the hillside. Facing the sunset and with the moon rising behind it is the perfect way to greet the evening.
When you arrive, we shall meet you at our farm house and show you to the cottage. We have a 4 wheel drive vehicle for guest to drive themselves the 3.5km farm track to the cottage [or we can drive you if you prefer].
Good Mountain bikes are available to explore the farm or brave our home made mountain bike track through our 3 acre native bush block [left at the cottage on request]. Duck punts [stable flat bottom boats] are left near the cottage to explore the newly rejuvenated wetlands. A white bait stand sits below the cottage for you to try you hand at catching the delicacy when in season [August to November, we have nets for hire].
Being only 55km from Auckland International airport means Te Papa Eco cottage is the perfect place to arrive or depart from. Instantly, you are in real New Zealand, surrounded by open spaces, a river at your feet and stars above.

Guest access

The Eco cottage is very private, set on a hill at the back of our 500 acre farm. Guests will have freedom to roam the farm, bush, wetlands and river.
Mountain bikes and duck punts are available. Horses are welcome

Interaction with guests

Other things to note

Good cell phone reception to create wifi hotspot but no independent internet.
Horses are welcome and can be grazed overnight. There are great riding opportunities around the farm with log jumps at regular intervals.

Couldn't have asked for more friendly, accommodating hosts. We booked last minute and they were rushed off their feet the day we checked in, yet they were as welcoming as can be. We wanted a secluded, romantic, quaint getaway and that's exactly what we got! Punting was a good laugh!

Spent an amazing day and a half at Stu & Kim's cottage... did not want to leave! The place looks exactly like the pictures... plus more, really. Didn't get to use the outdoor tub as it was quite cold and windy, but it was still so beautiful out there that we were a bit tempted to try. Ended up walking around their beautiful farm instead. The bed was very comfortable, thought we would be cold but it was quite cozy! We also fell asleep by the fire and could've stayed there as that was also very comfortable as we set up with pillows, blankets, and wore the soft robes they had in the bathroom. Shower was also amazing! Oh and the milk and cream! Yums. Stu and Kim were wonderful hosts. Our plane was delayed 5 hours and they stayed in contact and met us at their house so that they could drive us up the cottage (we did not have much off-road driving experience) after we did some grocery shopping. They are the sweetest, most wonderful couple we've met! We enjoyed the truck ride with them, just talking story. If you're contemplating on staying here, just do it! We would love to be able to come back someday, probably in warmer weather and for a longer stay, as there is so much to do at Stu & Kim's beautiful farm!

The fact that we really, really didn't want to leave says it all. Stu & Kim have done an amazing job on their cottage and we found it truly inspirational. The cottage is super remote and relaxing! We'll be back again for sure.

This was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. Stu and Kim were so accommodating, they let us check in early and check out late because they knew how exhausted we were from traveling. The location is even more beautiful in person and very private. You really feel like you are on top of the world. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle and just relax. It was the perfect way to start our honeymoon!
