The spacious house surrounded by a creek, river and the Pacific Ocean in what Costa Ricans call a "playa viva" as sands, depending on rains, winds, waves, tides, sun and moon, change constantly, has a fenced beautiful garden full of birds.

The space

Playa Agujas, a mostly calm and safe to swim beach is very quiet except on weekends when local families come to enjoy beach life. It is wonderful to live with the rhythmic sounds of the waves and the song of birds.
The house is spacious with large windows, beautiful hardwood floors upstairs, large kitchen, BarBQ, terrace and shaded garden with palm trees and an enourmous cenizaro, poinciana and ficus where macaws, parrots, toucans and 100 birds come to feed or play all day long.

Guest access

From Juan Santamaria Airport on the 27 towards Jaco, in about one hour And a few minutes you arrive to Playa Agujas. Through a gate you park almost in front of the house you will get detailed directions if you contact me.

Interaction with guests

You will be the only guests, as we preffer to rent to one family or group. Johnny Lopez will probably be the one to welcome you. Johnny is at ease in both, American and Costa Rican culture and language. He will introduce you to Agujas and the surrounding area. Please make arrangements as to your time of arrival and when to meet. He will be available on phone for any information or help you may need. Weelder, or Lila and little Dana who live in a smaller caretaker's house on the property are also available to give you the keys and any help you need.

Other things to note

It is a perfect place to meet with relatives and friends. The beach provides excellent walks and sometimes depending on the tide you can walk a few kilometers to the Fiesta del Marisco, a very good restaurant on the beach. There is also Bar Agujas about 300 meters from the house which has good food and fun local color with dancing and caraoki on most saturdays. The best rice and beans and patacones in Costa Rica and other delicious dished is available at "Gusticos" a restaurant of Santiago y Leticia also 300 meters away, on the road coming into Agujas. They will also bring ready-made food to the house or come and cook for you if wish.
Lila is available to sweep and clean every two days. If you would like your clothes washed she will do this at an extra cost.
There is a large "rancho," an open but roofed area in the garden for outside activities. Gato, our diver fisherman friend will bring you fish galore he will also take you fishing to surronding beaches or across the bay (if it is during the non rainy season )
Sheets, towels, soap, toiletpaper, etc are provided but , please bring your own beach towel.

We had an amazing time at this house! Situated just off of the beach, we had a blast exploring the cliffs, swimming in the ocean, and enjoying the local nightlife. It easily slept twelve, and there were plenty of fans to keep us cool. Thanks so much!

Highly recommended for groups! This place is amazing and has enough parking space, the house is fully equipped... can't complain!. This is a great location if your planning the croc's tour (Jose's Crocodile River Tour).

Only stayed here for one night on our way out of town, but Mariana was incredibly responsive and helpful leading up to the visit, the place itself is charming, plenty of space and lots of comfortable beds. Our group of 7 slept comfortably, with room to spare. Upstairs has a lot of nice wood throughout, it almost feels like a cabin, and we woke up to the wonderful sounds of birds.

An authentic stay in Costa Rica. The house is secluded, rustic and spacious with lots of windows. Big garden, lots of birds. We kept the windows open during our stay because it was hot, so there was always warm breeze blowing through the house. I could hear the ocean from my bedroom. Mariana and her local hosts were a pleasure to communicate with. They responded promptly, were warm and inviting, and very helpful with anything we needed. The beach that the house is located on is quite rocky, but still nice to swim in. It's very quiet and secluded during the week. On the weekends it got busier with people camping out and playing music. Walking 10 min down the beach, we discovered a sandy, calm beach, also quiet and secluded, a wonderful place to swim during low tide.

Unfortunately due to illness we had to cancel our stay at Mariana's property. However in the run up to our stay Mariana was very friendly and quick to respond to our questions. She also went out of her way to ensure we were able to have a partial refund despite the strict cancellation policy which we were incredibly grateful for.

Mariana's house was a wonderful experience. We enjoyed being able to walk right out the gate to go swimming, and the beach is beautiful, peaceful, and never crowded. It was super convenient for the coast and exploring Jaco. Great for a group of adults or even a family of young children.
