INTERLOCHEN, MI. — The only hostel in Northern Michigan. You get a bunk in one of our co-ed shared dorms. The bunk beds are hand-built and come with everything a budget traveler needs to crash after a day of checking out the "Most Beautiful Place in America." For private rooms, see Creekside Cottages' other listings.

The space
More than an ordinary vacation rental, Creekside Cottages is privately-owned hostel & rental business that values friendship, local engagement, environmental stewardship, low-cost & sustainable tourism. Bellows Bunk room is a shared space. Expect to run into other travelers and year-round residents! We are located in authentic log cabin lodgings constructed during 1930s to serve the logging railroads. Think summer camp, deer camp, or Little House on the Prairie! Right on the main roadway in the Village of Interlochen, we are a 20-minute walk to the Interlochen Arts Academy and within five minutes to restaurants, public library, post office and shops. It is 20-30 minutes driving distance to downtown Traverse City or to Leelanau and Benzie Counties.

Guest access
Guests will have key access to Bellows Bunk room. Lockers are available to secure your belongings (bring your own padlock). Each guest has their own bunk (top or bottom). There are four bunk beds (8 beds total) in a single room with stone gas fireplace, wagon wheel chandelier, an extra sink, microwave, hot plate, mini-fridge and tables. Guests share access to one full bathroom with shower.

In summer, they will also have full access to other features of the hostel. This includes a shared kitchen and eating space, additional full bathroom, outdoor space, lounge areas with "spillover" sleeping space, and free wi-fi.

NOTE: During the off-season [November - May] the Lounge may be privately-rented and therefore access to lounge area, full kitchen and 2nd bathroom are limited. Please ask when booking.

Other things to note
Extra Guests: If you're not traveling solo, please let us know so we can alter your reservation request. Bellows Bunk rents individual beds, but we accept parties up to five if there's room.

Water: The water at Creekside Cottages comes from a well. It has high iron content and is safe for drinking & bathing, but some people do not like the taste and it can cause discoloration of clothing, dishes and our bathroom fixtures. We use water filtration system at the source. Nevertheless, you may wish to purchase your own bottled water, or rinse your whites elsewhere.

Compost: Creekside Cottages partners with Interotten Community Compost to turn your food scraps into local soil. Each guest accommodation is provided with a 5g bucket. Leave your kitchen waste in back behind the leaf pile, or outside the doorstep when you leave.

Backyard: If weather permits, please feel free to use the bonfire pit in the backyard, but be sure to extinguish the fire with water or that the the embers are completely died down before you leave. Firewood is available for sale near the entrance of the largest driveway. Please do not trespass into the forest to harvest or gather your own.

Bugs & Dirt: We know. We're country folks living in the middle of a wetland forest. If spiders, mosquitos, or roly-polys aren't your thing, you may want to book a hotel in the city. Our housecleaners sweep, mop, and dust regularly; nevertheless, expect rustic & roadside, so you won't be disappointed.

Location

Interlochen, Michigan, United States

Directly across the road from amazing Bud's cafe; we're within walking distance of the Village of Interlochen's restaurants, shopping, Sunday farmer’s market, ice cream, putt putt golf, the post office, and public library, and within minutes of mountain bike and hiking trails; fishing, swimming, and navigable lakes and rivers; wineries, golfing, and scenic rides.

Internationally renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts is less than one mile (1.6 km) from our doorstep. Each summer, over 2,000 kids from all over the world converge for the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, studying music, theater, dance, creative writing, film and visual arts. Their annual Performing Arts Series is second to none. Check the schedule in advance, many concerts sell out quickly.

Also nearby is the Interlochen State Park, Michigan‘s first state park, created in 1917 when the state purchased the remaining virgin pines to save the area from deforestation by the lumber companies. It is situated between Duck Lake & Green Lake, originally named Wahbekaness and Wahbekanetta by members of the Odawa people who lived here prior to the arrival of European settlers. The State Park includes a day-use area on Duck Lake that features a wide, sandy beach, designated swimming area and picnic shelter that can be rented. Surrounding the beach is a wooded picnic area and parking for 200 vehicles. A boat rental concession has rowboats on both Duck Lake and Green Lake and is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There are boat launches on both Duck Lake and Green Lake.

There are plenty of local trails and haunts in Interlochen, but if you want the whirlwind tour of the area, we suggest Crystal Mountain for winter sports, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for summer excursions, downtown Traverse City for fine dining, entertainment, and microbreweries, and Old Mission or Leelanau Peninsulas for wineries, farms, small tourist towns and amazing views.
