Located on a leafy residential street in the historic Kingsborough district of Gloversville, NY, my 1830's house is minutes away from several lakes with year-round activities, including the Great Sacadanga, and Caroga Lake, and less than an hour to Saratoga and Albany - a great place to stay during the Saratoga Racing season - save your money for the track!
Furnished with cottage antiques, original art, and an extensive library (I'm a poet and book artist), this cozy house is bright and airy. The first floor layout has a circular flow pattern with an eat-in kitchen, dining room, living room and powder room. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms with queen beds - and a full bath.
The kitchen has a sitting area and a breakfast counter with three Thonet bentwood barstools. There's a stainless side by side refrigerator with filtered ice, reverse-osmosis filtered water at the sink, a stainless dishwasher and a gas stove. Small appliances included a microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, blender, and hand mixer.
The spacious dining room, decorated with a collection of floral paintings and two large gilded mirrors, seats 4 at a round antique mahogany table.
The living room has a gas fireplace, a down-filled sofa and chair and other comfortable seating. There's a glass-front bookcase with books and CD's. There is wifi, a portable CD player, but no TV - I've been watching entertainment on my laptop.
Upstairs, one bedroom has a queen bed with a white antique iron bed, a reading nook with pillows and a reading light, 2 dressers and shelves of poetry books. The other bedroom has a queen bed, a vintage library table desk with a printer, and an antique glass front bookcase with more poetry. Two curtained doorways and an interior window open on to a carpeted exercise alcove with yoga mats and dumb bells. There's room here for a twin air mattress if there are 5 in your group.
Mature plantings and magnificent maples enhance the experience of outdoor living on the large furnished porch and wrap-around deck with gas grill.
There's a driveway for parking one car; parking on the street is easy. The house is a few minutes walk to a 9 hole-golf course with a bar & restaurant, and a supermarket. Downtown Gloversville is a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk. It's a 3-5 minute drive to shopping, hospital (just down the street), restaurants, antiquing.
Please note that there's no t.v. The house is heated with forced air heat and a gas fireplace. There are air conditioners in the bedrooms, a ceiling fan in the kitchen and portable fans.
Children are welcome although please note that there are glass-fronted bookcases and low windows in the bedrooms that could be a hazard for toddlers.
I've rented my other homes, in Caroga Lake and the San Francisco Bay area, for a dozen years as vacation rentals to guests who've been consistently delighted with their unique charms and thoughtful touches. My California home has been featured in several interior design publications.
Guests have access to the entire house with the exception of a locked bedroom closet, a dining room cabinet of heirloom china, and my basement letterpress printing equipment, although they are welcome to use the washer/dryer in the basement.
Interaction with guests
I won't be present during your stay; you'll have the house to yourselves. If you need anything, I can always be contacted on my cell, and I have a local caretaker available.
This is a no shoes/no smoking house. Please leave it as nice as you found it.
