My experience staying in Hochelaga was amazing. First off the neighborhood is amazing. It's a real working class French Anarchists neighborhood with lots of amazing Cafes and Bars. Neighborhoods like this (The real deal) rarely exist anymore because of gentrification so it was nice to be in an authentic place. By the way, the residents of Hochelaga are very friendly. I had no problems due to not speaking French. People were very cool and accepting which is something you don't normally get in a neighborhood like that.
The apartment hosted by Lisa and her Cat is huge. Let's start with the apartment: Lots of Natural Light, two balconies to choose from to be in the sun or the shade and super quiet and peaceful for deep sleep. Great mattress, and bedding. I slept like a champ every night. Also let me note the Shower is divine. Gets as hot as you want and it has a rainforest shower head for a super relaxing meditative shower. I didn't want to get out.
Next let's talk about Lisa and her Cat. Lisa was the best host ever. She truly embodies what an Airbnb host should be. She's friendly, helpful, funny, empathetic and genuinely cares about the guest experience. So many times I would come back from walking around Montreal, that her and her friends would be eating or drinking and they would always invite me. Not because it's polite to do, but they also travel and are genuinely interested in people and different cultures as well.
....And finally, Cleo the Cat. I'm not usually a fan of any kind of Cat but this one is exceptional. I found myself laughing a lot watching the Cats ninja moves on the Balcony and checking on me in the morning by peeping in my window. Lol. The Cat was great comedy relief and I'm surprised that my allergies weren't active. I guess Cleo is a Hypo allergen Cat or whatever they call it when there is no reaction.
To make a long story short...if you want a safe, clean and welcoming place where you are treated like family-please stay here. Also stay here if you want an authentic experience regarding Montreal neighborhoods. This is not the normal tourist spot in Montreal which is a good thing. Metro and buses will take you there quickly but I promise if you come to Hochelaga, you may forget about everything else.
