'Bwaa' - the sound of the waves breaking on the shore. In this gorgeous beach front house, set in lush tropical gardens, your views of the sparkling turquoise sea and bright white sand are exquisite. Private chef and housekeeper. Hosts live next door

The space
We can claim to have the best location on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Here you step back to the pace of a gentler age and each house is unique but all are a stone's throw from the Indian Ocean. Houses sleep from 4 to 10 although many couples love the privacy of a house to themselves.

Guest access
All cooking and housework are taken care of. Fresh fish and seafood, seasonal fruit and vegetables come to the door. The chef is happy to shop for you or there is a shop for basics a walk away and shopping centres with large supermarkets a short drive away.

Other things to note
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean provide a natural spa and the coral reef protects the lagoon from large predators like sharks. There are sea urchins so tennis shoes should be worn when walking on the reef. Occasionally there are small jellyfish whose sting is painful but not dangerous. Otherwise, sea creatures are shy and would much prefer not to make your acquaintance!

Diani Beach, Kwale, Kenya

Galu Beach is a continuation of Diani Beach which is around the coral point but it does not have the tourist resort atmosphere of Diani although the amenities are there if required.

It is possible to be the only person on the beach at certain times of the day and it is undeniably one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Local fisherman head seawards in canoes as the tide goes down and deliver their catch to your door when they return.

You can go to the reef in a canoe to explore the coral gardens, walk, swim, deep sea fish, kite surf, scuba dive, play golf. Half an hour away is the Shimba Hills Game Park and Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary for game viewing. You can take an eco tour in the Coral Rag Forest (one of 3 left in the world), take a dhow trip, visit slave caves... Mombasa Island, known as the Island of War, has a 16th Century Portuguese Fort. Or you can relax and unwind!

John and I both grew up in Kenya and we live permanently on the property which my parents bought in the 1960s. We love to meet our guests and welcome them for a sundowner and a chat and are also available at any time to give advice or help. Things have changed enormously since my parents’ first arrived, when lions and leopard hunted the bushpigs in the forest and the coast line was empty for mile upon mile, but we try to retain a bit of the old ethos of low impact living. We prefer the Indian Ocean to spa treatments and believe in the power of our tropical environment to naturally send the body into into a state of total relaxation. The gentle kiss of the waves on the shore and the orchestra of cicadas in the trees is all music we need. Good food is very important to us and we make sure that our chefs are excellent and that food is fresh. With seafood delivered to the door by local fishermen and an abundance of tropical fruit we are very spoilt. Because we live in such a beautiful and tranquil place we like to holiday in busy cities - Istanbul, Delhi and London. John is a sports and motor racing enthusiast who used to rally cars. Hilary loves snorkelling, Swahili history, and culture and design.
