The first house built on Oak Island, high atop 20 acres of untouched maritime forest, knotty pine walls and oak floors glowing with 70 years' patina. A screened front porch runs the width of the house; private walkway carries you to 1000' of undeveloped beach; stairs up to a lookout tower with 360-degree views, horizon to horizon; a new staircase behind the house descends to our private dock to experience of the sound behind the house.

The space

Designed by my grandfather and built in the summer of 1945 by a team from his rug mill in Troy, these knotty pine walls glow with 70 years of patina. The second house built on an island that in the day was considered inaccessible (now only 2.5 hours from Raleigh), Leon Capel first had to build a road for using scrap cores from the rug mill and surplus WWII Willys Jeeps.

Guest access

You'll have full run of the house, front beach, undisturbed maritime forest and dock behind the house. The parcel is just short of 20 acres. Bring mud boots if you're interested to explore the wilder parts of the property... and do remember the insects, snakes, deer and other animals you'll see made their home there before you. You're the intruder.

Interaction with guests

The property is managed with the help of local cleaning and repair staff. We'll be available to help as much as we can given travel and other obligations. Please keep in mind that, no matter how hard we work to make your stay issue-free, spending time in a 70 year-old beach house will be a participatory sport! We may need your help to keep things working.

Other things to note

If you're looking for huge bedrooms, wall-to-wall carpeting and giant marble bathrooms, this is not that house. If you'd rather open the windows to let the warm ocean breeze blow through, ceiling fans turning lazily in every room, enjoy sunset cocktails on the lookout tower, go crabbing from the dock behind, luxuriate in your private access to an expanse of white sand beach (that you do share with other beachgoers), rinsing off in the world’s most wonderful outdoor shower — this is an enchanting experience of original North Carolina beach like you’ll have nowhere else.

I was so sad to leave this tree house high above the beach and sound. If you are looking for a historic and unique experience, I highly recommend Folly Hills. This is not your typical beach house experience. It is so much more. Our family loves adventure, so we fit right in with the timeless atmosphere that the host family has created over the past 70 years. We loved the property, sound access for fishing and boating, and the beach in front of the home is fantastic. We caught dinner one night from the dock. The home is filled with eclectic furniture and antiques. The appliances are not the newest, the bathrooms are not the newest and shared but the overall experience cannot be beat. The linens were good. Plenty of beach and bath towels provided. Plenty of hot water and great water pressure. The AC works great! It is a little musty but what do you expect from a home that survived Hurricane Hazel in 1954. There is wifi and a central television. There is plenty of room to relax inside and outside. I especially loved the hammock outside overlooking the beach. A few other highlights were being able to hear the ocean as you fall asleep and the metal roof provided a welcome sound in a rain storm. It felt like glamorous camping with so much history. We will be back! It was a pleasure and honor to stay in this home. Thank you Schuyler for your excellent hosting and thoughtful communication.

After seeing the house on the big hill for decades on our visits to Oak Island, we were ecstatic when we discovered it was available to rent. Schuyler was fantastic from the very beginning! As the designated representative of the family to manage the rental, he has assumed a great burden. He is not only a family member who grew up in the house, but its protector and curator. Folly Hills is not simply another house on stilts next to the ocean. It is a testament to beach life and represents everything you could ever want in a beach vacation. Upon our arrival, we were engulfed by the maritime forest that surrounds the house and felt immediately at home. Although the property is expansive, it is extremely private and quiet. Our first inclination was to explore and we were like kids on a treasure hunt at summer camp. Whether it be climbing to the top of the observation tower, hanging out in the hammock on the grass “porch” or descending the sixty stairs to the path toward the dock, we were constantly in awe of the care taken in building this property. I can imagine visiting this place as a child and never wanting to leave. Aside from the most wonderful views imaginable, there are too many great attributes to name. What you will find here is a quiet, amazing retreat. Surrounded by rows of beach houses, both old and new, Folly Hills feels like it is on an island by itself. With practically your own private beach and a private dock, the opportunities for fun are endless. We commented to each other on several occasions that it felt like we were on a movie set in Hollywood, both inside and outside of the house. An idyllic beachside retreat conjured up in a writer’s imagination would not do this place justice. We have stayed at houses from Destin, Vero Beach, Charleston, The Outer Banks, Mollymook, NSW, Australia, and even Captain Charlie’s III on Bald Head Island and rank this as one of our all-time favorites. Again, many thanks to Schuyler and his family for allowing us the opportunity to experience their home. He was a perfect host and we look forward to visiting again and again. Honestly, this house has a spirit of its own. Open the windows, feel the breeze and lose yourself in all it has to offer. This house will speak to you in so many ways. All you have to do is listen. Thanks again! The West Family

I'm a 45yo, grad-educated guy who's lucky to have lived and worked in some cool places: London (4 years), Paris (6), New York (2) and San Francisco (12). For the last 6 years I've been in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where I went to college, and am now living close to extended family.

In addition to other distractions I've spent the past five years developing a business in fun men's shirts (add the usual internet suffix to seaplaneshirts). Every summer we plan a promotional tour at a number of concerts and other events around the country.

I love design, photography, food and exercise. I'm passionate about the things that make every place and every person different, so when I travel I like to meet local folks, do local things, eat local foods. All my life I've found that leaving a place better than I found it is how I get invited back — which may be the reason I have been tasked with managing the family's beach house, offered here on Airbnb for the first time in 70 years of its existence.
