About this listing
A unique experience: beauty, peace, wilderness. A private rural spot with far-reaching views over a stunning slice of wild Devon. Without foregoing luxury: immaculate linen, double bed, wood burner, subtle electric lighting, views up the Teign gorge to Dartmoor, covered well equipped outside kitchen, hammock, fire-pit & probably the finest composting loo in England. A short stroll down a leafy, private track to a conventional toilet, hot shower & wash room with fridge.
If you long to be on your own in the open countryside, in a secluded spot with far-reaching views over a stunning area of wild Devon, but also like the idea of little luxuries like solid walls and windows, a comfy double bed, wood burner and hot shower, come and spend a few days in Fingle Caban. Nestled on the edge of a native broadleaf woodland with wonderful views over a large south-facing field that we manage for wildlife and up the Teign gorge towards Fingle Bridge, Fingle Caban provides unique accommodation for two.
The Caban has a sofa which pulls down (easily – can be deployed by one person) into a comfy full sized double bed, a woodburner (Chilli Penguin - made in Wales) to cosy up to on chillier evenings (wood supplied) and a stylish table and chairs. The Caban has been thoughtfully decorated and has full blinds so that you can enjoy a lie in- though we can’t guarantee the morning chorus will allow it! Outside is a well equipped, covered kitchen, a hammock, fire pit/BBQ, picnic bench and private composting toilet. A short walk down an oak and cherry lined private green lane (approx. 300m or 4min walk) takes you to a shower and toilet room and a wash room with sink, kettle, fridge, washing machine, power points, etc.
Offering comfortable and stylish accommodation in an amazing setting, the Caban provides far more comfort and security than fabric structures but leaves no more trace than a tent when removed at the end of the season.
Meticulously designed and built by innovative craftsmen in Snowdonia, with an impressively low carbon footprint, ‘Caban’ refers to the name given to Welsh mining cabins which offer shelter in remote but charming locations.
You'll have sole access to Fingle Caban and the woodland and field around it. Use of the toilet and shower and wash-room/kitchen area in the old farmyard. You'll also be able to use the shared facilities at Clifford Barton, namely access to the 50 acres of private woodland/meadows/lake, the Games Room: a historic barn with table tennis, table football and snooker/pool table, and a bike pool to assist guests' exploration of the wider area, eg. up the lovely Teign river-side track to Fingle Bridge, where you can enjoy the vibrant blue flashes of the kingfisher, dippers, see salmon leaping and if you're lucky get a glimpse of an otter. So put your car keys away and go and explore the wonders that the Teign Valley and Dartmoor has to offer.
There is also a library of wildlife books in the washroom that you are very welcome to borrow to assist you with wildflower, bird, insect and mammal identification if that is something that interests you. There is an OS Map of the local area in the Caban which will help you plan your walks.
Interaction with guests
Fingle Caban is in a very private and secluded spot within Clifford Barton's 50 acres of private nature reserve. However it is just a 4 min walk up a leafy private track from the main farm complex, comprising the main historic farmhouse Clifford Barton where we live and 3 low-key holiday rentals, converted former farm cottages. Guests can choose the level of interaction they desire, certainly if we're available - and if wanted we'll always endeavour to be, transporting bags etc to Fingle Caban on arrival and being shown around. But if guests would rather remain fully independent, gaining independent access and remaining secluded that's totally respected!
- Check in after 3pm, check out 11am ( a late check out is possible if guests are not arriving that day)
- Although the Caban is not suitable for children, we are happy for guests to bring babes in arms and have a travel cot available on request.
- Only guests staying at the Caban are allowed on site, unless agreed otherwise in advance.

Myself, my husband Gavin and 3 kids live at Clifford Barton. We fell in love with the place in the summer of 2013, as a wonderful location to raise our family. Having renovated the 3 cottages to a high standard, we are delighted to invite others to come and enjoy the peace and quiet and rich natural environment that this part of the Country has to offer. We manage the 50 acres of woodland, meadows, lake and ponds for wildlife and its enjoyment. We are all on hand to help you make the most of your holiday and advise you of local walks, pubs, activities.
