Gorgeous 5-bedroom lodge is literally 10 steps from the Winterset ski run. Features large open living area, plus separate living area downstairs. Two gas fireplaces. Master suite has huge Jacuzzi & separate shower. Outdoor hot tub. 3 flatscreen HDTVs

The space

This beautiful home is right on the slopes, making skiing easy for families with kids. Ski down easily to the Thunderstruck triple chair lift. In the evenings, walk 200 yards to the Timberline lodge for dining, nightlife and live music.
The master bedroom suite is on top floor by itself, with private bathroom and huge Jacuzzi. The Jacuzzi is under a canopy of windows with gorgeous mountain views. The main floor is a huge open space -- kitchen, dining and living area with 60-inch HDTV -- that can comfortably accommodate everyone. The main floor also has two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The house also has a full-size crib, a pack 'n play, a high-chair, a kiddie potty, a changing table in one of the main-floor bedrooms. Downstairs is another full bathroom, 50-inch flatscreen, plus two bedrooms including the bunk beds.
This chalet has a little more privacy than some other slopeside lodges, because you've got trees screening both sides of the lot.
Total interior square footage; 3,389.

Guest access

You have access to the entire house, with the exception of a small owner's closet. Garage not included in rental.

Interaction with guests

You will have the chalet to yourself. I'm available by phone and email at all times to address any problems or questions, including helping with suggestions for fun things to do in the area.

Other things to note

-- I generally require at least 3 positive reviews on Airbnb before I'll confirm a booking.
-- The chalet is our family getaway and we use it often. Please treat it as you would your own home.
-- A three-day minimum is required on holiday weekends and during ski season.
-- Your housekeeping fee covers laundering sheets and towels, vacuuming, wiping down surfaces and dusting. It does NOT cover cleaning up a disaster zone. In particular, please leave the kitchen in good shape. Load the dishwasher and run it. Clean specialty kitchen items including crock pot, waffle iron and griddle by hand and replace in cabinets.
-- Start a full load of sheets and/or towels in the washing machine before departing.
-- You must take out your own trash to the bin on the side of the garage. No loose garbage in the trash bin; it must be tied in plastic garbage bags. Do not leave any trash in the house when you depart.
-- There isn't a fire pit, and open fires are prohibited anywhere on the property.
-- The cabin is located on a part of the mountain that isn't particularly steep, and the roads and driveway are plowed regularly, so a four-wheel drive is nice but not necessary.
-- Minimum age to book is 25 years old.
-- Let me know ahead of time if you will have any pets with you.
-- The outdoor hot tub is great and it works 95% of the time. However, the elements are hard on outdoor hot tubs and they break down occasionally. The nearest repair shop is a long drive away. In the unlikely event of a breakdown that can't be immediately repaired, I will rebate $30 per day that the hot tub doesn't work.

Dan was very communicative, friendly, and on-point. The place was beautiful along with the natural scenery around town. If one recommendation, bring as much as you can since the closest super store (such as Walmart) is about 40min away. Thank you Dan for everything!

Big house, not too far from town or from the nature attractions.

My friends and I were planning on backpacking in Dolly Sods over the Labor Day weekend, but decided to rent this house last minute due to the rain. Dan was extremely accommodating, and the house was very nice and cozy! It is located in a great location, very close to multiple outdoor hikes and Blackwater Falls. Great option for close friends to enjoy a weekend away.

We stayed here with 8 adults and 2 small children and had a great time! Plenty of outdoor activities nearby (we came in the summer) and lots of space indoors and out (deck, hot tub) to spread out and enjoy our time without being on top of each other. It was well-equipped for cooking full meals and we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Had everything we needed for young children, too. Would stay here again if we are in the area!

Our family enjoyed our (EMAIL HIDDEN)munication with Dan pre-trip and throughout our stay was well timed, thoughtful, and helpful. Dan was generous with his time listening to my questions about the area and providing suggestions. Our family knew in advance that other than the occasional hike we planned to spend much of our time inside. Dan’s place was move-in ready. The home has all of the core essentials that you would hope for and often many extras that you wouldn’t expect. We were able to leverage the full-size fridge and freezer to stock up on groceries. We also valued the dishwasher and the plentiful utensils that we frequently used making family meals. Knowing that coffee is most important, Dan has two coffee makers – and I brought one too – so we were covered. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all very spacious. I would say the main room and kitchen were the highlights based on usage. We spent a lot of time sitting, looking out the expansive windows, talking, playing games, and cooking family lunches and dinners. The home has a beautiful deck to spend time on when weather permits and a few of the family members took advantage of the outdoor hot tub. There were some other homes within view and I enjoyed a couple conversations with other guests on the mountain. I personally enjoyed the gas fireplaces on a few occasions in the evenings and early mornings. I recommend Dan's place to anyone looking for a similar experience.

Dan's place was nice. Very clean and the location is fantastic. A tad dated but no big deal. Dan is very meticulous and much more communicative than any other host I've dealt with, not a problem for us but definitely something to be aware of. Overall a nice place but honestly a bit overpriced. If I had a large group I'd probably stay there again.

Response from Dan:
Rental prices vary substantially depending a number of factors. Hunter's group stayed during ski season and over the New Year's Eve weekend -- peak time on both counts. I guarantee my place is cheaper than anything similar you'll find through the local rental agencies for the same dates! I'm not sure what's meant by "more communicative;" I email check-in and check-out instructions, and I call or email on that first day of a guest's stay to make sure they're happy with everything. That seems pretty standard to me.

The ski chalet was perfect for the weekend with friends! Dan was a great communicator and provided amenities and tips to have a great time. I love the hiking and little towns as well. Would love to come back for ski season!

Nothing is better than returning to the cabin, exhausted, after a full day outside, and then relaxing with a great book (a new biography of Jack London is my current fireside reading). I'm equally comfortable biking or skiing with a big group of friends, or striking out alone, deep into a national forest for a hike or a camping trip. I grew up in northern Wisconsin, where I roamed the woods by boot or by snowshoe.
Now that I live in a suburb of Washington, D.C., I'm constantly thinking about my next getaway to West Virginia.
And I'm always eagerly anticipating the next snowfall!
