Beautiful, cozy, and fun home within walking distance to all things Salem! Ellen was a fabulous host! She was extremely accommodating and communicative, and even left us some great tips so we could enjoy the town like a local. Thanks, Ellen!

This home has history written all over it, from the wooden beams, to the steep staircases, to the fireplaces (non-working), you truly can picture what it really might have been like back in the 1800’s. Ellen was a complete joy to deal with, offering all kinds of tips for being first-time Salem visitors in the very busy month of October. We were a group of 6 with 3 others staying nearby and had plenty of room for socializing and sharing meals. House is conveniently located and within walking distance to all Salem has to offer. We would definitely stay again (as long as we could figure out the Apple TV).

This charming house is a find for just about anyone wanting to stay in Salem or the surrounding area. The preselected review answers don't really give you the options to properly describe Ellen and Gary's lovely home -- a wonderful mix of historic (check out the history of the house, how it was moved to its current location and why its front door is on the side of the house on the information sheet in the kitchen!) and modern (well-appointed and comfortable furniture in all of the rooms, updated bathrooms, carefully curated decor). Our family group of 5 - two adults. two college students and a high school student -- stayed quite comfortably for a long weekend visit that included a Red Sox Game, a family reunion in nearby Nahant beach, sight-seeing in Salem and dinner in suburban Lexington. Ellen and Gary's house is in a fairly quiet residential neighborhood and in convenient walking distance to everything in Salem -- where else can you find an elegant museum like the Peabody-Essex, historic sights like the House of Seven Gables and true kitsch like the Witch Museum, all within in a few blocks -- as well as public transportation. Parking is "off street" in the sense that you park quite conveniently in a little dead-end street across from the house. I had plans to cook breakfast in Ellen's small but well laid-out and nicely stocked kitchen, but the guys at nearby Derby Joe's cafe make such a great egg sandwich and superb coffee that we all opted for a morning walk to and from the shop every day. The kitchen did get plenty of use, however, as did the sweet fenced-in back yard. Ellen is honest when she says that the stairs in the house are steep, especially the ones to the lovely and spacious third floor master suite. If you're on the older side, really tall or have an extreme fear of heights, this might not be for you. Otherwise, they are perfectly manageable. We had a lovely weather for our trip, but Ellen is honest about the fact that the second floor has no air conditioning and does get hot. She was willing to move around the window unit (which more than adequately cools the third floor rooms) to the second floor, but it was not necessary. Open windows and cross-breezes were all we needed. Ellen is a wonderful host -- communicative, helpful and gracious, and not intrusive at all. She and Gary live in the house year round and only rent it out a few times a year, so the home has a personal feel that we liked, without being uncomfortable, like we were interlopers in someone else's life. Our group tends to be a critical bunch -- we do a lot of traveling -- and the only criticisms that we could come up with were: (1) the wi-fi password is too long; (2) it's easy to bang your knees when you're sitting on the chairs in the...

My husband and I stayed at Ellen's house with four of our friends for our babymoon. The house was a perfect fit for six people. Ellen included everything that we needed. She was quick to respond, and very easy to communicate with. She even let us check in early! The house is in a great location and about a five minute walk to Pickering Wharf. We would love to stay here again! The only downside was the second floor bedrooms were very hot, but we also stayed during an extremely hot weekend. The third floor bedroom has AC and the first floor stayed pretty cool.

Response from Ellen:
Hi Kim, You're right that over 85 gets brutal without AC but I can get more fans to try to improve the second-floor experience. Thanks for letting me know!

Ellen and Gary's home was so convenient for me and my friends. We stayed here for a wedding weekend, and the keyless entry made things easy from the start. We had plenty of room to move around, nice outdoor space to hang, and a great location that made the whole weekend very easy for all of our comings and goings. Ellen and Gary have done a great job setting things up to make their guests comfortable-- tons of towels, toiletries, hanging racks, etc. They were so welcoming and we appreciated it so much!
