About this listing

An idyllic rammed earth cottage set in the foothills of Saligao/Calangute. The cottage has been built using recycled and locally sourced materials where possible. This environmentally friendly building has a compost toilet and solar hot water.

The space

This is a unique round mud housed, built using the rammed earth method. The round part of the house has large dining and sitting area, with a wooden loft above the entrance with a double bed. The double French doors of the house open up to a deck and to the fields beyond. During the monsoon the deck covers a large pond, which will eventually be turned into a swimming pool. The cottage has two wings, one for the bathroom and the other where the slick kitchen is located.

Guest access

No outside visitors will be permitted on the premises at any time apart from those guests whose names have been entered on the booking form.
The inside of the cottage is strictly non-smoking. You can smoke on the deck or verandah.
No loud music permitted at anytime. No drugs, no narcotics are allowed.

Interaction with guests

I live in an apartment next to the cottage so am available if you need anything. On the property we also have a family that takes care of the garden, as well as two dogs.

Other things to note

Water: The hot water is supplied by a solar thermal system on the roof, which heats up naturally through the day, so best to have hot showers in the evening. The cottage has been designed to keep water and energy use to a minimum, and we encourage our guests to try to follow these principles.

Waste: Please separate your organic and non-organic waste. We have provided two bins in the kitchen. The silver one is for organic waste (such as all food and vegetable waste and tissue papers) and the plastic bin is for non-compostable things like plastic, broken glass, metal, Styrofoam, etc. If you have glass bottles, please keep them separately and we can arrange to take them to a recycling center.

Cleaning: You are responsible for cleaning the place up after yourselves. Please keep the kitchen clean and make sure that the stove is clean before you leave. Remember not to leave any food out, as that will attract rats.
We will pick up the waste bins after every 3 days or so. If you need, we can arrange for a cleaner to come and help you with the cleaning; you will have to pay the cleaner separately.

There is a washing machine in the house; I can show you how to use it. Please ensure the water connection tap to the washing machine is turned on before you start the machine.

The rammed earth cottage is really beautiful and spacious. It is remarkably cool due to the natural mud walls, and all the locally sourced materials used are very impressive. There is a wonderful garden and the views of the fields and the palms in the distance were stunning. It was such a striking experience to wake up and see peacocks and buffalos grazing in the fields in front. The place is well equipped and has a wonderful mix of a modern feel with old Portuguese furniture. Veronica was a great host and took good care of me and made great suggestions. My stay here was amazing and I would definitely recommend this place for someone who wants to see the beautiful, authentic and quiet side of Goa.
