Riverside Cottage sleeps four and is a period self catering holiday property overlooking the River Coquet. Built by the Duke of Northumberland around 1895, it is set in the attractive Village of West Thirston in the heart of rural Northumberland.

The space

This lovely period Cottage is situated in an idyllic rural village and offers views over the River Coquet, perfect for a relaxing, enjoyable stay. Just yards from the front door is the riverbank, with miles of beautiful riverside walks leading into the stunning countryside.

The Cottage is accessed through a state of the art keyless entry system leading into the Entrance Hall. This simple system means you have the freedom to not worry about carrying keys with you during your stay. In the entrance hall you will find a corner storage unit and towels provided for you to dry down your pet, should you wish to bring one with you. The Cottage has full gas central heating and is fully equipped and includes high speed fibre broadband (Wi-Fi). The Entrance Hall leads into the comfortable and stylish Lounge. It has a beautiful traditional cast iron open fireplace with slate hearth with an original oil painting above it. A lovely three piece suite, oak flooring and traditional window shutters. There is a 40" LCD television with built in DVD player and Sky Freeview HD, BluRay Player and a collection of books, games and DVD's.

The Dining Room has an original open grate fireplace with bread oven, wood surround and marble hearth. It comfortably seats four people and is complete with a drinks cabinet full of cut crystal glasses and a wine rack. The room benefits from a beamed ceiling and oak flooring, which adds to the character feeling. The Dining Room also has access to the outdoor seating area with BBQ facilities. The attractive modern Kitchen is fitted with a range of white wall and base units with wooden work surfaces. It has integrated appliances including an electric oven with gas hob and extractor hood, microwave, fridge and freezer, washing machine and family sized dishwasher. The kitchen leads to the downstairs cloakroom/WC.

Upstairs the Master Bedroom has a lovely wooden double bed with matching bed side tables, a built in storage cupboard with hanging space and chandelier lighting. The room has two windows with traditional panelled shutters and window seats offering beautiful views over the River Coquet and the attractive bridges in West Thirston and Felton. There is also a chest of drawers/dressing table and wall mounted 19" LCD TV with freeview. The Second Bedroom has twin beds and a cast iron open grate fireplace and surround, a built in cupboard offering hanging space and a chest of drawers. Our bed linen is exceptional - the finest 100% Egyptian Cotton, all from the White Company. The modern Bathroom has a panelled bath with hand held mixer shower head plus electric shower over, shower screen, wash hand basin, low level WC, tiled walls and flooring, vanity mirror and heated towel radiator.

There is on street parking available at the Cottage for the duration of your stay. There are no parking restrictions on any road or the bridge surrounding the property. There is also an off street parking area opposite the Cottage. Please note that one well behaved dog is welcome to stay at the Cottage.

Guest access

You will have full access to the Cottage, with entry via an electronic key pad on the door so there's no keys to worry about losing. This also allows a completely flexible check in after 3pm on the day of your arrival.

Interaction with guests

I live locally but I strongly believe guests like to be left to enjoy their holiday in peace. I'm of course contactable if there are any problems or you need any help during your stay.

Great cottage - we loved the village with its lovely bakery and pub. Close to local beaches also lots of little touches and a well equipped cottage allowing you to relax and put your feet (and paws) up!

Riverside Cottage was a lovely holiday home for our first holiday in Northumberland. The cottage exceeded our expectations and lots of little touches helped to make us feel very welcome and comfortable. Great for our dog with safe footpath walk 50m from the front door along the river. Everything we needed was supplied, the Running Fox provided wonderful pies for our suppers, the pub was great and also very handy, and there is a good village shop within 2 minutes walk. Perfect location for exploring coast and moors with loads to choose from. Our favourites were Cragside National Trust property including the 6 mile drive around the forest and lakes on the estate, Lindisfarne, and boat trip to Farne Islands for seabirds and seals. Saw a kingfisher from the bridge just outside the cottage! We would highly recommend.

Accommodation a well-equipped and furnished character cottage in a scenic village with easy access to quality pub & restaurant. Good location for walking. Location close to the A1 means transport to other locations was quick & easy. Never been to the North-East before & will return. Excellent beaches & other activities with less crowds than more southerly locations.

We had a fantastic stay at the cottage. The area was perfect for us as we could travel to beaches and castles within 30 mins or so and we loved the Running Fox bakery! The cottage had lovely comfortable beds and great quality linen and the kitchen was well equipped which was helpful for feeding the kids. The welcome basket was a great touch and made us feel very welcome. Andrew was very helpful before our stay, answering our questions and sending through detailed check-in information. Hoping to visit again soon.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Cottage. It is furnished and decorated to a very high standard. I particularly enjoyed the bed, which almost felt like a hotel bed! There is a nice pub next door, but the place was so nice that two evenings out of three we decided to eat in. The door mechanisms is a bit fidgety, but we eventually worked it out. Andrew was very kind and communicated extremely well. There are many beautiful places to see nearby, and we certainly hope to come back again!
