The Alexander Stewart is a classic wooden ketch. Hand built by a father and son, it has been passed for three generations. For those with a taste for adventure, this is an opportunity to experience something truly unique. Docked at Melbourne’s Victoria Harbour; close to the city centre, this ‘boatique’ bed & breakfast offers guests an unforgettable stay on a traditional tall ship. We invite you to come and discover your inner sailor and explore the rich history of this much loved vessel.

The space

Forget the bore of hotel rooms and overpriced hostel dorms, and book an unforgettable stay on a traditional tallship. Camp on deck under the stars (summer only), book a bunk in the forepeak or treat yourself to a private cabin. Whether you are travelling, looking for a local escape or in town for business, this is the perfect opportunity to spice up your stay in this fabulous city.

Sixty foot long and crafted by hand, the Alexander Stewart is a classic wooden ketch tallship that will charm you at first sight. Built over 18 years by a father and son, it has been passed down three generations, and has sailed as many states along the east coast of Australia. For twelve years, the Alexander Stewart chartered the Whitsunday Islands, but now it has found a new home in the Melbourne City Docklands, where it operates as a ‘boatique’ bed and breakfast, with afternoon cruises of Port Phillip Bay on summer weekends.

This is a truly unique experience for those seeking something a little different from the ordinary. But beware - this is a sailing boat; there are no luxurious bath tubs or walk-in closets, and the toilet and shower are squeezed in the same little room. Instead, it has character, charm, romance and a hint of old pirate ship cheek. You will need to climb, you will need to duck and you may end up walking the plank. So bring rum, bring wine, and join our crew for an experience like no other, as we invite you to come and discover the life of a sailor and explore the rich history of this much loved vessel.

The design of the Alexander Stewart features nine private cabins, a small kitchen, a saloon and library and two bathrooms. Sailors are minimalistic people, so leave behind the large suitcases and unnecessary items as they simply will not fit in the compact cabins. The beds are cropped to the shape of the hull and only few stretch beyond 6ft. The open deck is the perfect opportunity to relax with a glass of wine while you watch the spectacular sunsets, or retreat to the hammock to delve into that book you have been meaning to finish.

Guest access

You will have access to all areas of the boat at all times, including the kitchen which has a fridge, gas stove and the essentials. Breakfast is provided daily and WIFI is available from the main deck. There is no curfew, however I do ask for all guests to be respectful of each other and reduce noise after 11pm.

We have multiple cabin options available to book which include:
Camping on deck - $30pp/night
Single bed in twin share room - from $45/night
Private twin share (2 single beds) - $90/night
Private Single (double bed) - $75/night
Private Double (double bed) =$110/night

Interaction with guests

Ivan and Lachie will be your friendly hosts during your stay and will be available for anything you need.

Other things to note

This is not your typical bed and breakfast. Mobility is required to move around the boat and there is no disabled access. Physically large people or those who are claustrophobic may struggle to find comfort inside the boat.
The marine toilet systems are much smaller then a regular size toilet and have a noisy flush.

The cabin doors do not lock so please avoid bringing valuables or keep them on you. There is a gate at the jetty to the boat that stays closed.

This was a great, quirky little place to stay. Something fun and different. My only suggestion is read THE WHOLE DISCRIPTION. So you know what you're getting yourself in for.

What an amazing fun place to be nestled away in the city, so close to everything. This beautiful "boutique" is surely one to add to the bucket list if wanting something different to experience.

Great to stay on a boat and right in the city centre. My cabin was bigger than I expected and breakfast was a bonus.

Amazing location in the heart of the city, and a beautifully built sailing vessel with lovely comfortable cabins. Absolutely recommend staying aboard if you have reason to visit Melbourne.

A unique experience in the heart of Melbourne. We enjoyed the opportunity to have dinner on the boat and chat with other guests who were interesting and friendly. The wooden interior of the boat is beautiful and we enjoyed staying in our little cabin.

I absolutely LOVED staying with Maggie on the Alexander Stewart! Such a charming ship. I'd happily recommend anyone to enjoy an adventure on board, just as much as I'd love to stay again. Maggie only compliments the stay with her warm, welcoming and friendly nature :)

Sitting out on the deck having a cuppa first thing in the morning was lovely. It was very quiet and still whilst we were there. The loo/shower combo is very small... but part of the fun of this original experience.

After growing up in the Whitsunday Islands in North QLD, I was a born sailor and a beach baby. However, after a visit to Melbourne more than 3years ago, I fell in love with every aspect of the unique and exciting culture and gave up the warm tropical waters for a colder climate in the best city in the world. I have spent years endlessly exploring the city searching for the best coffee, live music venues, markets, festivals and everything that Melbourne has to offer. I love hosting Airbnb because it offers an opportunity to meet new people and direct curious travellers to local gems as well as teaching the ways of a Melbournian. I am well travelled and understand how many likeminded travellers feel about hostels. My vision for The Floating BnB is to offer a more unique travel experience that is more then just a bed and an empty transaction. I want to give guests an experience built upon passion. I have sailed to some of the most amazing places in the world and enjoy sharing stories over a lovely cup of tea or a glass of wine.
