Total remodel of kitchen, Great Room, wood flrs and baths in 2017. Huge pool, hot tub and 4 decks with water views. Sound beach less than 2 minute walk, the ocean beach less than 3 minutes, recently renourished making it 100 yards wide, bigger than most Fla. beaches. Home has private treed lot, huge kennel, 2 outside grills (gas & charcoal), fireplace, 5 flat screen TVs and 8 bookcases full of novels. I've been a Superhost since 2014, Airbnb's highest honor, with over 80 five star reviews.

The space

5 bdrooms: 1 king master bd rm & 2 master queen bd rms; 1 full bd rm and 1 has 4 bunk beds. 3 full baths. Interior is antique juniper wood walls decorated with ship's captain artifacts, hundreds of books, original art & paintings - very unique. Remodel in 2017 including brand new kitchen, stainless steel applis, bamboo wood floors, new baths, etc.

Guest access

Anything I have. This is my home year round, except for rental weeks, so everything you need should be here.

Interaction with guests

Greet them at door, show them around, then I leave my home for them to enjoy.

Other things to note

Many restaurants have sunset views, which is what Duck is famous for. (See my pics). Plenty of boat, wave runner and wind surfer activity in huge, but convienently safe and shallow, Sound waters. Ocean mere steps away, less than 3 min stroll. But respect it. It is named the Grave Yard of the Atlantic for a reason. OBX also known as best beaches on East Coast with destination waves for surfers. The largest amateur surfing organization in world (ESA) has held their championship here every year since 1971.

Treat it like your own home.

That's about it for the rules.

But let me explain: Airbnb has built a community of hosts and guests world-wide that has redefined how we view our home space and the strangers we let share it while we are away. Two penniless art majors formed the company from nothing not long ago, and now it is worth over $35 billion.

Obviously, the concept resonates with a certain type of people.

It asks you to enjoy the unique space created for your vacation, then leave it how you found it, to pass it on to the next guests. This new sharing economy requires more of us than simply checking out of a motel. There are plenty of those in OBX, and most rentals here are like that too, they are not year round homes. Except for summer guests, they sit empty the rest of the year, like abandoned ship wrecks that our beaches are famous for uncovering after a good blow. Merely transactional in summer then empty the rest of the year. Airbnb is not like that. It is about home, it is about people trusting each other, it is about hosting guests, not simply customers.

I have been a Superhost since joining Airbnb in 2014 and my 80 plus 5 Star reviews speak for themselves. Guests appreciate our effort. They trust us and respect us and this home. It is often better than I left it, when I return, though that is above and beyond a guest's duty. Still, many make that effort.

Welcome. This is your home for a week. Treat it like your own. Enjoy.

BTW, the Town here encourages bringing your own linens and towels to Duck to take back home to launder at the end of the week. It conserves water. Our barrier islands are very fragile. I have plenty of towels and sheets in the closet but it helps to bring your own. My washer is brand new in case you need it.

You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - Two flights of stairs, 1st floor is bedrooms, top floor is Great Room, kitchen, dining area and killer water and Duck town views. Classic OBX style.
Pet(s) live on property - Vito, the Cane Corso Italian mastiff, lives with me & leaves with me when guests arrive. Thus the reason I welcome your dogs - cant be as bad as Vito!
Amenity limitations - As stated in Home Rules, the Town requests guests bring own sheets and towels to launder when you return home. Barrier islands must conserve water.

Our family (my wife and two young kids) stayed here for a week in August 2017 with extended family (7 additional people). We quickly could clearly see why John receives such glowing accolades as a star host. From the start, he was extremely responsive and informative. He was also very thoughtful, for example, after asking if he had any pool floats for kids or beach umbrellas, he replied he didn't but then within 24 hours replied he went out and bought some new floats and umbrellas for us to use. Additionally, he mailed some clothes we left in the dryer and insisted we don't reimburse him. As for the house, it's in a great location, truly about a 3 minutes walk to the beach (the hill back from the beach can be a daunting walk in the late summer heat). The pool was extremely clean. The location seemed far away enough from the main strip in Duck, but was a quick drive away from anything we needed. The only negatives would be the insects (big spiders mostly) inside and outside the home (however, I'm sure a lot of the homes in this area suffer from this since you're almost surrounded by water. However, with the spiders comes a lot of cobwebs throughout the house. However, again, it probably takes a lot of time/diligence to keep up with cobwebs. Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay and would definitely trust John again with a future family vacation.

Response from John:
Thank you for that great review. Very kind of you. 5 stars is an honor. As for the spiders.... you are the 2nd quest this year to mention them, after having no one raise the issue since I began renting the home in 2002. So something is off and I will find out and fix it. As my Response below from one other guests shows, these are harmless, non-biting, Daddy Long Leg type creatures that normally are not here in August, so this is unusual. But yes, every home on the island is dealing with it. They feed off Midgets, that also only show up a week or two each year, in Spring or Fall, never July and August. So something is unusual and I will sort it out. Thanks for the heads-up.

This was my family's first time using airbnb. I would recommend John's home (it's not just a house) to anyone I know. The home is just north of Downtown Duck in the Carolina Dunes section on OBX. The kitchen, dining area, living area on the 3rd floor was spacious. The home has 4 decks, 2 of which offer a great view of Currituck Sound. The beds were comfortable and all the bedrooms were spacious. There was even enough room in the room that house 4 twin bunk beds. The walk to the ocean was a couple of minutes away. The pool is large and the hot tub was soothing. Both are well kept. We spent a lot of time by the pool, when we weren't at the beach. Our dog also enjoyed the home. We brought an adjustable gate (that can expand to about 4 feet) that we placed on the lower deck stairs that gave our dog the run of the 2 decks on the Sound side. There is a Walmart and a Harris Teeter supermarket right after you get off of the causeway. If you drive north from the home to Corolla, there is another Harris Teeter, as well as a Food Lion supermarket. I hope that anyone who chooses John's home will have as much fun as we did.

Response from John:
Thanks for the 5 star review Tom! Very gratifying from a first time Airbnb user, some of whom don't seem to get your distinction between a house and a "home." I also touched on it in the House Rules section of my site. Viewers are encouraged to read it before booking. One guy below didn't and the result was a malicious fabricated 1 star review, my first ever out of over 100 reviews since 2002, over 90% of which were 5 star. Goes with the territory I guess but after reading his I was about to block all first time Airbnb users, until yours renewed my faith. Thanks again!

John's house is cozy and very comfortable. The pool and hot tub are very comfortable and pretty roomy, and there's a good amount of seating in the living room for movie nights. John showed us around the house when we arrived and was very quick to respond to all of our questions throughout the week. The only issue we had was that the back porches had a lot of spiders, so if you're afraid of creepy crawlies, be prepared to knock some of them down with a broom. Overall it was a great experience and I'd be happy to come back.

Response from John:
Glad you liked my home and found it cozy, clean and comfortable -- except the spiders outside. Yes, we in OBX know about that type of spider who arrives semi-annually usually only for a week or two in early Summer and early Fall. They feed off a tiny airborne bug that also only arrives that same time of year. Both are harmless and neither bite, similar to locusts, and their nuisance is short lived, here today gone tomorrow. But for a week or two, we must knock down the webs every morning and do it each day, because they return every night, for a week or two. Small price to pay for living on the beach in OBX. Thanks again for the review.

John has a 3 story house just 2 blocks from the ocean on a quiet street in Duck, NC a small town on the outer banks. the pool is a terrific addition that we enjoyed daily and it was wonderful to have our dogs with us for the week we stayed. John is a great host, friendly, helpful with information and quick responses to questions before we arrived and during our stay. he was very generous in allowing us to use staples on hand and we loved all his mystery and crime books as well as the big screen tv. I totally recommend this great place to enjoy the outer banks. it is centrally located between kitty hawk and corolla. you need to be able to climb stairs as homes in this neighborhood are built up to provide a view of the ocean.
