We had an amazing time in Port Alice! It is an amazing small beautiful town. We strongly recommend Stubbs Island whale watching from telegraph cove, we saw the lot! The visitor centre in Port Alice was brilliant, you won't get much phone or wifi so the visitor centre was a must for us, lovely people there and great for the kids to play sports in the sports hall. Beatrice's home wasn't perfect for us and Daryl on site was such a nice guy the kids loved him and chardy dog! Worth making the extra journey up north for sure !

As advertised. If you require cell service it was spotty in the apt. I usually had to go outside to get cell service.

Very cute and tidy place. It was more than well equipped and super central. The surrounding views were breath taking. Great communication with the host and more than we expected. Great find on air bnb

This place has so much potential, and previous reviews (there is also a visitor book in the house) suggest our experience was a one off. However the check in experience started us off badly, with a last minute notification we needed to collect the key from a town 6 hours drive away. The host managed to get the neighbour to let us in so this was fine in the end, and would have just been an inconvenience we could forget about, had it not been for the cleanliness issues throughout the apartment. The biggest issue was the bedding - there are three bedrooms, two of which the bed sheets had been slept in previously and not changed - you could smell and feel it, with stains on the pillow and sheets, and dirt and 'bits' within the bed sheets. My mother slept in the children's room beds as these seemed clean and fresh. I salvaged some packaged clean bedding from the bottom of a cupboard and had to strip and change the dirty sheets. The bathroom was dirty, with hair and bits in the bath which we needed to clean out. The floor and walls were also dirty. The rest of the apartment was quite clean, except for the dining room table cloth which had multiple food dribbles and stains. There was a strong smell of damp in the apartment, I think due to nobody being there for a while with the heating off. The kitchen was well stocked, albeit utensils required a second wash but perhaps us being fussy following our experience elsewhere in the apartment, but for some reason only one metal fork, a plastic fork and two spoons - odd for a three bedroom house. I think we may have just had a bad experience due to nobody being in the apartment for a while, and previous guests not cleaning and/or the host not cleaning following their visit. However, having paid to stay somewhere with bedding included in the listing - you expect a basic level of cleanliness and comfort and we found the entire experience unpleasant. The location is perfect, and the place itself fine - just give it a good clean, buy some forks and spoons and improve communication and this place would be highly recommended.

Response from Beatrice:
Fran, I am sorry you had such an unpleasant experience in my home. There were some obvious communication errors I would like to clear up. At no time did I EXPECT you to come to Parksville to pick up the keys. The arrangement I have is with my neighbor who goes in and turns the hot water tank on and the heat when he knows I have a guest coming. My guests always get the keys from my neighbor. Unfortunately my last guest forgot to return the keys to my neighbor when he left and dropped them off at my home in Parksville. In the meantime my neighbor had an extra set cut from the housekeeper so I was not worried about you getting in. The ONLY reason I tried to contact you a couple days before was to see if you had already gone through Parksville on your way north and if you had not, I thought it would be nice to meet you and your mother and thought maybe you could take my extra set of keys with you to give back to my neighbor. I can assure you that the place was cleaned and beds sheets changed the day prior to your arrival, as I had just had guests the prior weekend. My housekeeper assured me she spent two hours cleaning in preparation for your arrival. I always keep an spare set of sheets in a zippered plastic bag in each of the bedrooms for guests who stay longer and prefer to do their own laundry. The last two guests had not left dishes in the sink so my housekeeper never thought to check the cutlery drawer. I had a full service for 8 people and I honestly have no idea what happened to my cutlery and for that I sincerely apologize. The building is older, having been built in the 70s and Port Alice has more days of rain than sun, so unfortunately it does have a somewhat musty or damp smell until it has been opened up. I apologize for not advising you of that prior. I can assure you I have very high standards myself when it comes to cleanliness and I have had three groups of guests stay in the past month with no complaints. I have a housekeeper who comes in after each guest and changes the bed linens for the next guest. I have never had complaints before.

Our stay was amazing! The condo is actually nicer than the pictures show (how often does that happen!?). The condo is on the ground level and loading all your gear in and out is made extremely easy from the balcony door (you can see the ocean from the balcony). There is a huge VHS collection of many great classics and a WORKING! VHS player. The place was clean and fully furnished. Port Alice is a great little community with the great outdoors at your disposal. I highly recommend going to Alert Bay for a day of hiking, sightseeing, and the interesting cultural center. I would definitely come back to stay at Bea's home away from home.
