About this listing

Sunny room in a Hawaiian rainforest, on the 2nd floor of a beautiful home. This well appointed room has a queen size bed and private bath. Close to town, yet you won't know it. The house sits on 6 acres of tropical rainforest, with no other homes in sight, and the landscape is filled with huge trees, tropical plants and exotic flowers. Just outside old Pahoa town, with it's array of restaurants, and near the Red Road, Hot Ponds, naked beach, world class snorkeling, surfing and lava viewing.

The space

My home is out in the middle of a few acres that are a lifelong landscape project for me. Not another house in sight, you'll feel like you are away from civilization, but in reality only minutes from Pahoa town, the beach, hot ponds, and the Red Road. 20 minutes to Hilo. 20 minutes to the volcano. 2 hours from Kona.

Guest access

You will have your own room and bath on the second floor. A sunny room with windows on three sides looking out over the forest and gardens. WiFi, and group area with TV. A nice kitchen with everything you could need is also available to share. Wander the beautiful property, discover hidden gardens and ponds. Marvel at the variety of tropical plants and flowers.

Interaction with guests

You will probably want to rent a car if staying here, but the around the island "Hele On" bus has a stop just a short walk away. Depends on how much running around you want to do. I am retired guy and might be available to act as tour guide, taxi, etc. I spend most days at the coast, beach or hot ponds, when not gardening.

We had a quiet night's sleep in the middle of Steve's lush and cared for rainforest property. In the morning, we shared a cup of coffee on his lanai and Steve shared his vast knowledge of the island with us.

Steve's place is out of the way but worth it! sitting on the back porch in the dark listing to the frogs and listing to the rain was great! private surroundings. close to sites. Steve was very friendly and helpful.

Botanical gardens with concierge service! We loved everything about our stay with Steve, he's very welcoming and we were instantly at ease with him. He's familiar with all the local things to see, do and eat! His yard is a beautiful botanical garden, make sure to spend some time on the deck listening to the amazing sounds of nature.

Steve was an excellent host - super helpful and easy going and a pleasure to talk with. My husband and I enjoyed our stay at his home tucked away amongst the trees and birds but close to town and all the local gems (Pahoa, warm ponds, Mauna Loa/Kea, Hilo, beaches, etc). The bed was comfortable, the bathroom clean, and the kitchen ready for cooking. We'll be back next time we're on the Big Island. Thanks Steve!

Steve User ProfileSteve is a superhost.

I'm a single guy recently retired from a successful career in California. I have a passion for adventure and travel, and I love to meet new people and to go new places. I am 4th generation on the Big Island, and I know most of the secret spots and happenings. I'm up with the sun everyday, and usually turn in fairly early. Much of my time is spent in my 6 acre garden, when I'm not out exploring the island. I have a laid back lifestyle with most days starting in the water, either at the beach or hot ponds. I love to surf, swim, fish, snorkel and scuba dive, really anything in or near the water. My kids and grandkids live 2 hours away, and I get to see them fairly often. My home is gay friendly and 420 friendly, but I prefer no smoking in the house. As a host, I keep to myself unless needed. The level of my participation in your experience is up to you. Some levels of food, transport, or tour guide assistance are also available if desired.
