The nearby tram (3 minutes) takes you to all the big museums (Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Concertgebouw. The big grocery stores you can find on the Haarlemmerplein (3 minute walk).Central station is on walking distance but it is also possible to take bus 18. Nearby you can take a ferry to the new hip and happening Amsterdam north, tot visit the filmmuseum, the hip restaurants and markets/festivals. It is great to come home to a quiet and warm home after a day in the exciting wonderfull city of Amsterdam.You can rent a boot or a bike nearby.
