Quiet and secluded cottage on 3-hectares overlooking Akaroa Harbour. Seemingly remote but only 3km from the township. A private, peaceful retreat with amazing sea views and abundant birdlife. If you enjoy the outdoors, soaking in an outdoor spa, are happy to park on the roadside and take a 70-metre bush walk with steps down to the cottage then you will love this place.  If you prefer drive-on access check out our Akaroa Coastal Studio listing. Enquire about a harbour cruise on our 33-foot yacht.

The space

The cottage sleeps 3 and is secluded, self-contained and well-equipped with modern appliances. Linen, including all bedding and towels, is provided. It is sunny and warm, heated with a heat-pump. Complimentary WiFi and SkyTV (including sport channels). Enjoy the views from your bed and a soak in the lovely big bath or enquire to book a soak in our outdoor spa pool (jacuzzi).

Guest access

Guests have the entire cottage to themselves, including the outdoor patio/bbq area. There is a 70-metre path with steps down to the cottage from where you park your car on the roadside and a spiral stair inside serving both bedrooms so the accommodation may not suit persons with walking disabilities. The spa use is shared with other guests at our studio so please enquire to book your time - we will provide a contact phone number when you arrive.

Interaction with guests

We live elsewhere on the same property, out of sight of the cottage but not far away if help is needed.

Other things to note

Follow us (akaroacoastalretreat) on Instagram for photos and suggestions of places to go and things to do while staying with us in Akaroa. We also run HARBOUR SAIL, offering personalised cruises and/or sailing coaching on the harbour in a modern 10.2-metre FARR MRX yacht during summer months - please enquire. Akaroa Harbour is famous as the summer playground of Hector's dolphins, the worlds smallest and rarest species. The Akaroa Coastal Studio is close to the start of the Banks Peninsula track and handy to other walks, restaurants, cafes, boutique shopping, museum, wineries and a variety of outdoor activities including scenic harbour cruises, swimming with dolphins, kayaking, golf, horse riding, tennis, bowls, sailing, fishing, and cycling.

Jenny and John's cottage was lovely for the two of us. It's not much of a drive from town but it's so quiet and serene. The view was stunning both from the cottage and the spa and it wasn't cold in the cottage either, despite being the middle of winter. It was a cosy and lovely stay, and we easily could have spent more than two nights. You can tell Jenny and John are super hosts the cottage is so well kitted out that we never had to enquire about anything and had lots of privacy. When communicating about booking the spa they were great too and John was helpful in showing us the features of that flash spa. Can definitely recommend the costal cottage for a getaway for couples, families and friends.

We were there for a couple of very cold days, recommend it is probably better in the warmer weather, with the sun shining

We had the most lovely stay at this sweet little cottage this weekend. It was in a great location, nice and peaceful. We specifically booked due to the fact it had a spa that we could use. It was a little walk down from the cottage, and we needed to let the owners know when we wanted to use it, but they were always available and willing to give us access when we requested it. The spa is actually incredible - views over the water, under the dreamy star lit sky, with no noise or light pollution to be seen. Magical. We would defintely stay here again and recommend it to anyone who was wanting a relaxing couple of nights (or more!) in Akaroa.

The period cottage is set in a forest with lots of native birds. If you are looking for a quiet place to get away from the city- then it is perfect. It is a small cottage that fits in nicely with the Akaroa settlement. The walk from the car down an incline to the cottage is through a forest, so just be careful not to bring a large heavy suitcase.
