Tasteful, classic, simple 1873 farmhouse with 5 bedrooms, situated on 7 rolling acres, surrounded by streams and forest, perennial gardens, a barn to have candlelight dinners, an epic outdoor stone fireplace and access to waterfall at adjoining property with a swimming hole. A magical escape for family and friends - the quintessential summer rental. Conveniently located 10 minutes from Saugerties and the 87, and towns like Palenville, Catskill, Hudson & Woodstock.
Over the years we have truly loved our country home - it has been wonderful rejuvenating escape for years for our family and friends. It is large enough for one to have privacy if desired. Because of the layout of the house and the land there are many activities to keep everyone occupied alone or as a group. We have tried to maintain the simple historic beauty, lines and decor of the farmhouse adding a few contemporary touches over the years. There is an office/study on the main floor that one can work at and also an art studio upstairs with incredible light to work in. The glass dining room has sliding doors that can be opened completely or screened in to have wonderful dinners with a feeling of openness and nature. The kitchen is a joy to cook in. The property is surrounded on 2 sides with streams and the waterfall so there is a lovely sound of flowing water in the back ground. There is a state forest that begins at the side/front of house so you have a feeling of seclusion and privacy. We often open the 2 sets of barn doors, light our electric candles and either sit or have dinners at the table and take in the view of the forest. There was a historic house on the property - some of the stone foundations are still there and we use the old stone fireplace with a stone patio to relax or cook at. There is a sense of light and air and space with rolling lawns and lovely gardens. We love the sense of solitude and the convenience of the location being so accessible to nearby towns. After 30 years this will be the first time we have offered our home to others to rent and hopefully enjoy it as much as we have.
As our guests you will have full access to all of the house and land and outbuildings. Over the many years we have been coming to our country house we have rarely seen anyone at the waterfall & stream, and even though it is not actually on our property it is more or less land-locked and difficult for anyone to access - you walk down the stone steps at the end of lawn follow the path and you will arrive at the most magical spot for swimming and taking in the beauty of the falls.
Interaction with guests
We have our friend Judy as well as our handyman Tim that will be available should you have any questions or problems.
Other things to note
If a small dog is part of your family we may consider the possibility of them joining you for additional cleaning fee. We would prefer a non-allergenic breed as our family members have allergies to animals. Sorry, but cats cannot be accommodated for this reason.
- We ask that you love and respect our home as much as we do.
-If you did want to have a larger gathering please let us know and we can discuss and see if it can work for both of us.
- There is no smoking allowed inside the house or barn. If you do smoke please do so outside and keep your butts contained for cleanliness and fire safety reasons.
- If you use any supplies out of the kitchen we ask you enjoy, but please replace.
- We ask that you please refrain from having large parties unless agreed upon in advance, for example a large family gathering.
-Please use common sense when building fires inside or outside the house and also the use of candles. Do not leave unattended and when finished please extinguish exterior fires when finished. Please do not light real candles inside the barn.
-The burners on the stove must be lit with the lighter that we have supplied - please light lighter first then turn on the gas to ignite...if you do leave the gas on too long please turn off for a few moments - let it clear, relight your lighter and ignite.
I am an author illustrator who lives in NYC. I love to travel. I have owned this wonderful country home for over 30 years and it has been a life saving escape from the rigors of city life. The house is simple and clean. It is a restorative meeting place for family and friends. There is a bird nest in the porch every year.
