Our home is beautiful, comfortable, and certainly one-of-a-kind. You will find hand-crafted original fixtures and fittings as well as top-end modern upgrades where it counts. Our four distinct sitting/living room areas make ample room for everyone.
Welcome to our quirky, lovely home!
Our house is listed as a four bedroom, three bathroom house, and we can comfortably sleep 12.
Designed and built in 1905 by polymath and founder of the UC Berkeley Entomology Department Charles Woodworth, our home is on the Berkeley Historic Register as a truly unique piece of local history. We have over 100 individual windows in our house, many original. There are endless nooks and crannies to explore. We call our home "Maze Hill," because we've lived here five years and still aren't sure we've discovered absolutely everything!
On the ground floor, you will find a sitting room, dining room that easily seats 12 - 14, large TV and media room, and huge kitchen. We are avid and enthusiastic cooks and our kitchen is equipped with everything you need to cook a gourmet meal. You'll also find a game room with a shelf stocked with everything from Settlers of Catan to Scrabble to Dominion and more.
There is one cozy bedroom on the lower floor with a full-size Casper foam mattress. On the mid-upper level are two more bedrooms, one with twin bunk beds for the kids (or young-at-heart), and the master bedroom with a queen Keetsa mattress and ensuite walk-in shower bathroom.
The top floor boasts "the Big Room," a 40-foot long hang-out space and playroom perfect for kids or adults to gather. There is another TV and sofa set in this room as well. The fourth bedroom with a queen Casper mattress is on this level. There is an open balcony light well to the kitchen. Also, don't miss Charles Woodworth's "peep hole" under his desk, where he could look at front door visitors before deciding whether to go downstairs and open the door.
Our front and back garden are designed in a permaculture-inspired urban homestead style. We grow apples, blueberries, raspberries, plums, loquats, apricots, persimmons, figs, tomatoes, and many herbs. There's almost always something in season. If it's ripe while you are at our home, please eat and enjoy! Or, just sit out on the deck and enjoy our mild Berkeley afternoons.
Our house is perfect for gathering with family or friends, or finding your own corner to nap or read a book. We know you'll love it.
We are in the Southside / LeConte neighborhood, an oasis of quiet houses just outside downtown Berkeley. We are easy walking distance from Elmwood, downtown Berkeley, and Telegraph Ave., with dozens of excellent restaurants nearby.
We are equidistant from Ashby and Downtown Berkeley BART, about a 10 minute walk from either. Buses are frequent on Telegraph and Shattuck and biking is easy as we are in the flat part of town. We have space for one car in our driveway, two if they are small. Street parking is 2-hour permitted parking during daytime hours.
Other Things to Note
Please remember that you will be staying in a home, not a hotel. Therefore, we ask that you treat our space with the same respect you would show your own. We travel often and have help managing guest services for our home while we are away.
Our home has an electronic lock or lockbox located on or near the entrance.
The Pillow team will be available for assistance via email.
Before and during your stay, you will have access to our mobile-friendly guest site that contains check-in instructions, access instructions, amenity details, FAQs, and a reporting tool for maintenance requests.
The codes needed to enter the property are available 48 hours prior to check-in in our online guest site.
Other things to note
Although they will not be present during guest stays, we do own a dog and a cat. Our cleaners always make the house spic and span before your arrival; however, please note that if you have severe allergies, we cannot guarantee that the house is 100% pet dander free.
Thank you in advance for respecting our house rules, they are very important to us. Please keep a reasonable volume so as to not disturb our neighbors, and do not invite other guests or have parties. We would appreciate it if you wash any dishes you use during your stay. Please leave the house in the same condition you found it as when you first arrived. You will be staying at a Pillow Homes approved property and guests are required to follow the Pillow rules and terms.
I'm Jess Liotta. I run a moderately sized outdoor education company and camp. My work is split between Portland and Berkeley, so we often let out our Berkeley place when we're out of town. I have a passion for creating awesome, unique experiences for others, and sharing our home by hosting is a natural extension of that... because our home is certainly unique! I also love to seek out new places to explore with my family, and have traveled to Airbnbs all over the country and abroad.
