I am completely in love with our cottage in the Southern Door County area. It is near Brussels, Wi, in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by the beauty of nature that Door County is so loved for. Our location is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and reset.

The space

Our cottage is a House on a ridge on the shore of Lake Michigan. The shore is not a sand beach and the water level can change within days from touching the bottom step to 10' of dry shore to a shore filled with shells but whatever its current status is, it is one of my favorite places on earth! And you will not find more beautiful sunsets anywhere in the world!

It is located in the Southern Door area, 5 miles from Brussels, WI where there is a great small town grocery store & local restaurant. It is 2.5 miles to a boat launch at Sugar Creek County Park and 8 miles to a 6-lane launch at Robert M. Carmody County Park. There is plenty of space in the driveway to park your boat & trailer so bring it along. And of course everything that Door County has to offer, is just a gorgeous drive all the way up to the tip of the Peninsula, with many lighthouses to visit and state parks, specialty shops, non-chain restaurants (as well as some of the chain ones located in Sturgeon Bay).

It is on a quiet road in a small neighborhood that lines the bay side of the Lake Michigan shore. The property has a large yard to enjoy, surrounded by woods and a wonderful view of the water.

There are 3 bedrooms, 2 of them have queen size beds and one has a bunk bed with a queen bed on bottom and twin on top.
The home is stocked with pots & pans, cooking utensils, dishes, coffee pot, toaster, microwave, stove, frig.
There is a gas grill that can be rolled out of the garage and a fire pit if you prefer cooking over a wood fire. We try to keep a enough wood in the pile to get you started and there are many little roadside spots to buy additional in the area.
We provide the bed linens, bath towels, beach towels, even a canoe (Jill's rule: all must wear the provided life jackets and use of canoe is at your own risk). There are also a few board games and a DVD/Blu-ray player.
The lake shore (not a sand beach) is accessible by a set of 45 stairs (good for a great morning workout) and it is suggested that you bring suitable shoes (water shoes work great) to protect your feet from the shells and rocks if the water level is low enough for taking a stroll on the shore.

Guest access

You will have full use of the house except for a couple of locked owner supply closets.

Interaction with guests

We enjoy meeting with guests when possible but part of your journey includes the beautiful drive to Door County so I like to give you the flexibility of not having to plan for a specific arrival time. You may want to stop and enjoy unexpected sights along the way--remember to "stop and smell the roses", have a cup of coffee, or enjoy a view you rarely have time to take in during the normal rush of life. One way I try to help you start with this relaxed mind set from the moment you leave your house is to have a key lockbox. I will give you your current combination a few days before your stay so you will have access to the cottage. If you do have an approximate arrival time planned and would like me to meet you at the cottage please let me know that when making a reservation. We can make every effort possible to coordinate schedules. I also carry my cellphone to stay accessible through texts, phone calls, iMessages. I never consider a contact from a future or current guest to be a bother.

There is also a notebook, that is continually being updated, on the desk in the kitchen. It contains information which you may need during a visit.

Other things to note

___________________________
There may be times we have to come to mow the lawn etc. We normally try to schedule this between guests stays but weather or our travel schedules may make that impossible so if we do need to come out during your visit we will first attempt to check with you so as to not interfere with your enjoyment time of the yard.
___________________________

The house water comes from a well and has been tested for purity and is completely safe; however, there are a lot of minerals in the water including iron and not everyone cares for the taste or smell. You may prefer to use bottled water for drinking or cooking.
____________________________

Cell phone reception can be spotty and is non existent in the drive way but there are places in the house it works for most guests. Please note: T-Mobile and other phone companies or plans that do not co-share tower signals with the major brands may not have any signal there. We do provide wifi so if your phone can switch to that it is great!

I do not charge a cleaning fee upfront. You have two options:
Option 1. DIY. Please leave the premises in the condition you found them Except for the bed linens & bathtowels; (you strip the beds that were used and place them in a pile in the hall and put used towels in the provided basket, leave the laundry to us) All needed cleaning supplies are in the bathroom cupboard and a simple guidelines checklist in the binder on the desk.
Option 2. Cleaning fee of $75 left on the desk by the keys as you check out. This is on the honor system and 100% of this goes to my assistant, Vickie. It is appreciated if you can let us know in advance so Vickie can plan her schedule accordingly.

Please clean up after your pet, respect the quiet of the neighborhood, no off-leash unless your doggie can stay right by you.

There is a limit of 4 cars or 3 vehicles plus a boat.

Please, only small fires in the outside firepit--the breeze from the lake can carry ash and sparks. Wood is not included but there are many locals selling bundles on the roadside. And we usually have a small supply available to get you started so you will be able to relax around the fire from the very first evening of your stay!

The indoor fireplaces are non operational at this time, they are actually insulated to conserve energy for the central air conditioning and heating.

Please limit showers to a reasonable length as the home has a holding tank so keeping water usage to a normal level is very much appreciated!! If the holding tank alarm goes off you may silence it per instructions in binder and please text or call me as soon as possible and I will arrange to have it pumped. This is done from the street and will not interfere with your vacation.

Please keep the canoe tied up whenever not in use, life preservers(provided) are required when taking the canoe out on the water. Please return paddles and life jackets to the garage. Do NOT mix alcohol & canoe use.

2 bikes are available but you will need to bring your own helmets.

A gas grill is also available for your use, please clean it when you are done.

Now just bear with me for a few short no-nos: No firearms may be discharged on the property or surrounding properties, including but not limited to target practice. A violation will be grounds for required immediate vacating of premises.
Also, and you probably feel as I do that it goes without saying, no use of illegal fireworks, no use of chain saws, no cutting down any trees on property or neighbors' land.
Only intended use of lawn furniture is allowed, please do not carry or toss it down to the shore.

This cottage is not the place for parties with loud music, drunkenness, large bonfires, and noise at a volume that the neighbors can hear, they are all great people but for many of them it is their peaceful home neighborhood!

You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - 4 steps to enter house. Full set of stairs to basement where laundry is located. Access to the water is also via a set of 45 steps.
Amenity limitations - Cell phone signal is weak in places and practicality non existent in the drive way. We do have internet with wifi through CenturyLink.

Our stay at the cottage on the lake was lovely! The cottage is in a nice, quiet area that gives you a nice break from the large amount of tourists in many areas of Door County, but is also a nice driving distance from many of Door County's attractions. Our dogs really enjoyed playing in lakes waves down on the shoreline! Jill was a wonderful host, making sure to communicate with us often and provide thorough instructions about the house and wonderful recommendations about the surrounding area. The fall colors were outstanding! We very much enjoyed our trip and hope to return in the future!

This is an idyllic location. The view, the quiet, the fresh air, the fire, everything was fantastic. It is a big and comfortable house, well appointed, with everything you will need! We were super-happy to have found this little gem!

Response from Jill:
Thank you for the kind review. Would love to have you return but the problem with winter at the cottage is the unpredictability of snow and snow removal. The driveway tends to get drifted full. We did buy a used snow blower for our lawn tractor this summer but we have not used it yet.

This is a great place if you don't like the hustle and bustle of Door county. Very dark skies for viewing the stars. The 45 stairs to the water are a bit scary at first, but well worth the jaunt down to the bottom for a dangle of feet in the bay. They do lean a bit here and there. Jill supplies a vast number of things for you to do. We had a very nice time. The beds were fantastic, but if you have back issues, might want to bring along something to support it while sitting around. She also offers dvd's and blu ray player, so might want to bring some movies or rent in town.
