Step back in time in this historic antique colonial cottage built in the mid 1700s. Former residence and Studio of Rockport Artist Rudy Colao. The home contains many historic features and charm. Large back yard with deck. Short walk to small beach and town with shops, galleries and beaches. Larger beaches are a quick 2 mile drive or bike ride away. Enjoy whale watching out of Gloucester or a train ride to Boston on a rainy day.

The space

This is one of the oldest houses in Rockport. Renovated in 1998 with the goal of preserving as many historical features as possible. An addition of an artists studio has been converted to a large bedroom on the first floor. The house has a small but adequate kitchen, dining room, large living room, 4 fireplaces, lots of original wood paneling, wide board wood floors and exposed beams. Upstairs there are 2 small bedrooms and a bathroom accessed via a large bedroom. The house sleeps 6 comfortably. One of the upstairs bedrooms has a trundle bed for an additional guest (child). The large private yard is enclosed by stone walls. A deck with an outside table and chairs is an enjoyable place to relax.

Guest access

Guests will have access to the entire property which includes parking for two vehicles.

Interaction with guests

We do not live locally but plan to meet guests when they arrive to show them the ropes.

Other things to note

Due to the age of this house there are some quirks that guests should make note of. The stairs leading to the second story are very steep. The ceilings upstairs are 73 inches high with beams in places that make it even lower. The shower upstairs is short and would be difficult to use for anyone taller than about 5' 8". Upstairs has an air conditioner for use during hot summer nights. For tall guests the large studio bedroom with queen bed downstairs is comfortable. The downstairs bathroom shower is a small claw foot rub with a shower kit and is suitable for taller guests. The house is comfortable and the right people will love the historical charm of this very special property.

The house is exactly as described and photographed. Very comfy for our family of five and in easy walking distance to Bearskin Neck and Front Beach. Great yard and generally very restful surroundings. If you take this old house for what it is (a very, very, very old house), it is lovely. Marta was a pleasure to deal with throughout. We would definitely return.

Perfect home for my husband and I and our three kids (7, 8, and 10)! The home is exactly as Marta describes, with lots of historical character, which we love. Marta has thought of everything, from comfy beds and lush towels to boogie boards for the beach and lots of seating in the gorgeous (and huge!) garden. We walked to the beach and to the shops and cafes daily, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Can't say enough good things about Marta, the house, or the location. We'd love to come back!!

Phenomenal experience. Charming house in a great location with easy access to Main Street and beach. We also forgot some clothes which Marta graciously offered to mail to us. Fantastic host.

Marta made contact with us prior to our arrival to note our arrival time and to ensure that she would be there to meet us. Her and her husband, Jeff, were both there to greet us and our children upon our arrival. Both very gracious and took the time to show us and the kids the entire house and where everything was located. The home itself boasts a throwback to the quintessential New England home life that most will find welcoming. The rooms are quaint and cozy and worked comfortably for our family of five (10 yrs and twins 15yrs). As mentioned in Marta's post, the stairs to the upstairs are a bit steep, but very doable. The deck and yard were very spacious and a nice retreat in the mornings and evenings. The location is perfect and set between two beaches within walking distance to each and both offer a different experience which the kids enjoyed. Old Garden boasts large boulders that the kids enjoyed climbing on and finding numerous crabs. Front Beach is located in the village and larger than Old Garden. Again, it is within walking distance from the house. This beach houses restrooms and easy access to stores and restaurants. Parking to visit this beach was $15 for the day on the day we decided to drive down. We enjoyed a day trip to Boston via the train located about 5 minutes (driving) from the house and a trip into Gloucester for whale watching, shopping and dinner. Definitely a trip we look forward to taking again!

Marta and her husband were fantastic, gave us a lot of good advices and were fully committed to the quality of our trip. By the way, Rockport is a very very plaisant town, ideal to both rest and discover the area of Boston. Would come back again with no hésitation !
