Claire was a fabulous and very kind host. She welcomed myself, my partner and two sons with open arms. The apartment was in a perfect condition and Claire had left us essentials so when we arrived we did not have to worry about going shopping straight away. The apartments is very cosy and in a beautiful, romantic location. Claire gave us all the information we needed to have a deeply restful and comfortable break. We felt at home in Cucugnan and we will definitely be back !

Our ten-day stay with Claire was much more than a simple holiday. Thanks to Claire's kindness, generosity and knowledge, our time in Cucugnan became a discovery, an exploration and a homecoming all in one. The apartment is comfortable, spacious and well-appointed, perfectly situated to explore historic sites and to enjoy the beauty of the area. Claire is exceptionally well-informed about the history of the region and guided us to a much more personal and thought-provoking experience of our excursions to various places than we could ever have hoped for, further enriched by her fluency in both French and English. As a host, she very generously provided not only the necessities for our arrival and stay but also games for the children (and adults) and unexpected gifts over the festive period. It is impossible to imagine a more considerate hostess and having to leave was our only regret.

Claire was warm and welcoming, sharing wine and homemade snacks on arrival, as well as leaving a welcome gift of bread, butter, milk and coffee plus lots of larder items that may be useful. She was available if needed and otherwise discreet. She's also an expert French teacher if you are interested in tuition. Staying at Claire's was a chance to experience living in a traditional hilltop French village, full of shops and restaurants and with a great bakery. A perfect place to stroll about and wonderfully located for visiting Cathar castles in the area. The spacious apartment is on the lower 2 floors of her traditional 5 storey house and has its own entrance. The bedroom on the ground floor opens to the garden and we fell asleep at night with the door left open listening to the chatter of the neighbours on their chairs out in the street until well after dark, and the breeze blowing through fig, almond and olive trees in the garden. We spent mornings reading in the sun then afternoons exploring. A perfect base for the area.

We stayed with two persons for two weeks in Claire's apartment in Cucugnan in August 2015. The kitchen and living room are situated in the same room, with a (sleeping) sofa and a round dining table to sit on/at. The kitchen is fully equipped - including a proper oven, three induction pits and a American coffee machine - so visitors can eat at home properly every day if they want to. Wifi access if very limited from the living area; some devices may only connect while standing in the hallway. The two person mattress is very nice and soft, while the bed itself is quite juggly. So when one person turns around the other is rocked quite a bit. Also, a person taller than 195 cm won´t fit into the bed properly; I'm taller than that myself and after two nights I went for the sleeping sofa in the living area for the remainder of our holiday. The bathroom is clean and features a toilet, a small tub that also functions as a shower, a wide sink cabinet and a small washing machine that we didn't use. Visitors are not allowed to flush the toilet paper after doing their business, so that's something to take into account. Also, persons taller than +- 190 cm won't be able to shower while standing upright, this due to the shower hose not being long enough. Apart of that there is plenty of storage space, air conditioning, as well as a nice back yard to relax in. Claire also has equipped the bookcases with plenty of literature and information about the area, including an extensive book on Catharism and the Albigensian crusade that really comes in handy if you want to visit the places featured in this historic event. Claire is a very helpful host, always ready to accommodate, assist or give information about the area and its history. The bed linens and towels provided were clean and smelled fresh. The host also provided us with fresh bread and breakfast materials for the first days, which was much appreciated. All in all we had a good time while staying here!

Cucugnan and the area is a great place to stay. The village itself feels authentic, the people are friendly as is Claire, the host. She was very helpful and understanding (we arrived rather late), yet not imposing - great balance. She welcomed us with the famous Cucugnan bread (excellent) as well as other essentials (butter, milk, coffee, tea, honey). The apartment is in fact located at the lowest level of the house with the bedroom at the bottom floor of the duplex, hence a bit dark. It is here where you access the outdoor space from. The garden shown on the pictures is in fact a few steps from the house through a little gate. The apartment is clean and very spacious with plenty of room to store all your hiking/travelling gears and it is nicely equipped. We and our little daughter (who had a separate camp bed provided by Claire) have genuinely spent a fantastic week in Cucugnan and its great surroundings.

This was a great place to spend a week of southern French summer. The surroundings are majestic and bucolic, and the town is quaint and yet functional (great restaurants, good bakery & store). Claire is a fantastic host and can answer any questions you have about the region, wines, history and walks.
