Tommy Bit is our shepherd's hut for 2 in Borrowdale, the heart of the Lake District. Enjoy fantastic views, cook up a meal on the campfire or curl up on the sofa in front of the wood burning stove. Fabulous walks from the hut to the lake and fells.

The space

Please note, we can usually only offer arrivals on Fridays and Mondays. If you wish to arrive on a day other than Monday or Friday please get in touch and we can check if we can help you.

Tommy Bit is our cosy, traditionally styled shepherd's hut in Borrowdale, the English Lake District, which is nestled at the foot of the fells with wonderful valley and woodland views. Shower and toilet facilities are in our barn about 40m away. Glamping at its best!

Keep snug in the winter with Tommy Bit's wood burning stove, or cook outside in the summer on the fire pit. Relax after a day exploring the Lakes in our wood fired outdoor hot tub (£25 for exclusive use for a day, please book in advance).

We provide tea & coffee and Tommy Bit has a kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge inside and a fire pit outside for you to cook up an outdoor storm! Or you can try one of the local hotels for dinner. Bed linen, towels, crockery, cutlery and appropriate cooking things are provided.

Tommy Bit has a fold down small double bed (4ft wide instead of 4ft 6), which folds away, fully made up, into a sofa in the day. There is a folding table with stools inside as well as outdoor table and chairs. In case of rain, a tarpaulin can be suspended from wires above the outdoor area.

There is a shared room nearby with washer, drier, lots of tourist information and puzzles and games that you can take back to the hut. We also provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 12 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate.

Guest access

Guests have their own parking space and exclusive use of the hut and outside area, with table and chairs. They are welcome to explore our small wooded fell side behind the studio. They nearly always have exclusive use of the nearby shower room (it is very occasionally shared). They have access to a shared utility room with washer, drier, extra tourist information, games, puzzles, books and portable bbq.

We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub in our little wood, which can be booked for a day at a time for an additional cost by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.

Interaction with guests

Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. Tommy Bit is nestled in at the bottom of our wood half way between our house and cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.

Please do not exceed the maximum occupancy of 2 guests. When you book we will ask for the names and addresses of the guests staying - we are happy for you to change these, but just let us know!

The price includes bed linen, towels, electricity and wood for the stove and fire pit. We don't provide charcoal - if you prefer to bbq on charcoal please bring your own.

Our accommodation is no smoking (both inside and in the gardens/grounds) and pet free.

We don't include any cleaning fees in our prices, instead we ask you to leave your accommodation clean and tidy at the end of your stay. On your arrival we ask for a small returnable deposit (£20) which we hold while you are with us. At the end of your stay we return this after a quick check. We would like to do this deposit through airbnb but their minimum deposit is £70 which we think is too much! If you would prefer to pay a cleaning fee instead, please let us know and we can arrange this.

We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub, which can be booked for a day at a time by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.

Finally, please let us know of any anything you need or any problems you might have while you are here. We want you to have a great stay with us and letting us know of any issues as soon as they arise means we can sort them out as soon as possible instead of their dragging on through your holiday. Feel free to ask us about great places to walk and visit while you are here - our family has been at Manesty for six generations so we should be able to point you in the right direction!

Rustic, cosy way to spend some time in the beautiful Lake District. Sitting under the stars in the hot tub is a memory that will stay with us! Naively perhaps we thought it was slightly more secluded (ie: we didn’t appreciate it was surrounded by holiday cottages). Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

A great base to explore a beautiful location. A very warm, cosy hut which is very cleverly designed in terms of use of space and amenities. The fridge and the storage trailer were very very useful. I would say that the location and accommodation border on true luxury, just remember that preparing meals will remind you of camping, so long as you like cooking in the great outdoors then you're happy! Finally, combined with some strenuous walking and fresh air the hut provided me with some of the finest sleep I've had in months. For a mountain getaway I highly recommend this place!

This remarkable place is the perfect destination for a short romantic holiday. My husband and I throughly enjoyed our stay. The hot tub was delightful. Alan made sure we had everything we needed and was super helpful throughout our stay. Would highly recommend anyone looking to explore the Lake District. With many amenities, high degree of cleanliness and the best duvet I've ever slept under, it's well worth the price! Cozy paradise!

Alan and Cheryl were helpful under unfortunate circumstances and we hope to return to the shepherds hut soon (in one piece).

The Sheppards Hut is a beautiful and quirky space that is plenty big enough for a couple. Both Alan and Cheryl were lovely, and gave us lots of tips and help with our stay and the local area. The location is nothing short of stunning with great pubs and restaurants within a short or long walking distance. We went paddleboarding and the access to Derwentwater is excellent from Manesty and the National Trust car park on the other side of the lake. We'd definitely stay there again; next time with the kids!

We loved our stay in the Shepherds hut, the location and the view was absolutely amazing. It's just a ten minute drive from Keswick, where there is so much to do and see! We were also pleasantly surprised at how warm the hut was, we didn't even use the in door fire once as it was cosy enough! They really do have everything you need on site so just bring yourselves and some food to eat and you'll have a fantastic time! Such a peaceful and memorable experience.

Alan & Cheryl are fantastic hosts and the area they have in the lakes is beautiful! We came for a relaxing break from our busy jobs and definitely found it here. We originally looked at renting a cottage on the same site but went for Tommys bit to do something a little bit different. We we're so glad we did! Tommys bit was small but comfortable and well equipped! The outside area meant we could cook outside (with the help of Alan one night when we couldn't get a fire going). The hot tub is a must! We even had a lesson in how to light a wood fired tub. We were in it all evening, it was a highlight of the holiday. Recommendations to the local pubs & activities on the lake were also really good, there's so much more we would like to do if we went back or had stayed for longer. Perfect holiday!

Alan's family has lived at Manesty, in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years. Our children (now grown up) are the sixth generation to have lived here. Our family has a long history of welcoming visitors to this magical part of Borrowdale and we are proud to continue the tradition of sharing our beautiful little corner of England.

If you want, we're able to provide you with a wealth of local information and tips. Our 'walks from the door' is just one way that we try to make sure you get the most from your Lake District holiday. We live next door so we're always on hand to answer questions, help you book activities and recommend things to do but far enough away though that you don't need to see us if you don't want to. We're really proud of our cottages and glamping accommodation and love our area. We hope to welcome you soon!
