Perched atop a forest clad cliff on the southernmost tip of Taal Lake, sits Ataalaya, a 5 hectare rural retreat that celebrates the heritage and traditions of Old Batangas, yet offers the comforts of modern living. Ataalaya's design could best be described as Colonial Melange - blending elements of Cape Dutch and Indian styles with Philippine architecture.

Its most striking feature is the amazing vista of Taal Lake featuring Taal Volcano itself, the lake's islands, and majestic Mount Maculot.

The space

Perched atop a forest clad cliff on the southernmost tip of Taal Lake, sits Ataalaya, a 5 hectare rural retreat that celebrates the heritage and traditions of Old Batangas, yet offers the comforts of modern living. Ataalaya's design could best be described as Colonial Melange - blending elements of Cape Dutch and Indian styles with Philippine traditional architecture, creating the ambience of a colonial plantation home.

The name Ataalaya is an amalgam of the Spanish word 'Atalaya' which means lookout tower or point, and Taal. Its most striking feature is the breathtaking vista of Taal Lake-- featuring Taal Volcano itself, the lake's islands, and, most remarkably, majestic Mount Maculot, dominating the lakescape. This is the side of Taal Lake that most visitors have never seen, with its jungle backdrop, unusual flora and fauna, and the absence of urban sprawl. One will experience the Lake as it must have been like in days gone by...

Ataalaya is an ideal bed and breakfast for families and friends. It functions as well as a placeholder for events such as retreats, private functions, small conferences, reunions, team building, weddings, birthdays, etc.

Ataalaya is truly a magical discovery just an hour and a half's leisurely drive south from Manila.

Guest access

Guests are free to use house facilities, including a 2 level pavilion and a jacuzzi overlooking the lake. The area also has a hidden bamboo garden which can be explored. Guests are also free to roam the plantation adjacent to the house.

Although steep, there is a rough trail leading down to Taal Lake which you can hike to swim and see the lake from a different perspective.

The house has a garage that can fit 5 cars, with more available parking space across the property.

Guests can use the washing machine with a charge of PHP300.00 per load. The iron and ironing board can be borrowed, free of charge.

Interaction with guests

There is a caretaker who lives in the premises who canl be of assistance, should the need arise.

Loved our stay at the Ataalaya Farmhouse! About the Host: Patricia was highly proactive in providing important details and reminders before the trip--quick replies and always pleasant. About the Place: My family and I booked a 3-day/2-night stay at Ataalaya. The farmhouse is just lovely. The view is absolutely stunning! Against the greenery you’ll get plenty of from the farmhouse is a panoramic view of Taal lake with the Taal volcano on the left, and Mount Maculot on the right. The house itself has two floors guests can occupy. On the second floor are 3 bedrooms, a shared bathroom, and a huge open balcony perfect for reflecting, meditation, or just about any sort of relaxing activity you like to do. It’s also perfect for bonding/drinking sessions at night. On the ground floor are another bedroom, the kitchen, the den, and the lanai, which also serves as an al fresco dining area. There is also a Jacuzzi at the lawn. About Our Stay: We arrived around lunchtime and the caretakers had cold towels and fresh coconut juice waiting for us. It was perfect after a 2 ½ hour drive. We lounged around for a bit and started prepping for our afternoon barbecue. Ataalaya’s kitchen is fully equipped with any cookware you may need. They have a grill and even an air fryer! Very helpful and friendly helpers at the farmhouse was such a bonus! (Please make sure you tip them well because they will not stop trying to assist you.) In the afternoon, we had the Jacuzzi, which had the perfect view of the lake, set up. We soaked in all the beauty as we waited for the sun to set. You won’t actually get to see the sun set from the view of the house, but watching the skies change into different sunset hues of pink and orange to total darkness, to the moon and stars coming out cannot be more amazing than watching it in a Jacuzzi. It was a wonderful experience! Night time came and we were back on the grill to make some dinner. The lighting on the house was perfect. Spotlights hit to accentuate it. The farmhouse was beautiful at night as it was during the day. We didn’t even mind the many buggy friends we encountered flying around bulbs during dinner. In the morning, the helpers had our breakfast ready at the time we requested them to. After breakfast, we toured the farm, and checked out the produce that they had. We purchased some organic eggs and bananas to take home! Make sure you do too. They’re great! The rest of the second and third days were repeats of our first day. Grill, meats, beer, the lovely house, and the fantastic view, and lots and lots of relaxing and bonding time with the family. ☺ I would most definitely go back.

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house with our family. It is a hidden gem in an otherwise rather rural region, with breathtaking views of Lake Taal, amazing calm and peace. The owners are delightful, very international people, interesting to chat with. The helpers were extremely attentive, taking care of all of our whims, preparing hearty breakfasts every day using local delicacies and self-grown fresh fruit; helping with our laundry, giving travel advice etc. The property is upscale and stands in contrast with the otherwise poor region. Travel to it is probably impossible without a car and without the detailed directions from the hosts. If this was my house, I'd probably keep it a secret and only share it with my very best friends, yet these people decided to open it up to everyone to enjoy!
