“Ponticello a San Potito” is a charming B&B, located in the middle of Sassi di Matera, a few steps away from the beautiful Cathedral. It's an exclusive position, ideal for visiting the historic centre and the ancient city: the Rioni Sassi.
The property was converted from an old premises for the production of cheese, and it's the perfect combination of old and new. A mix of historical elements within a space purposely left as its origin, that blend with the latest technology available to guest
The setting, designed and studied in detail, features a welcoming and charming atmosphere. It consists of a renovated single-room property, with full contemporary usability ensured by adding the functional bathroom block, air conditioning and air exchange, LED lighting, satellite TV, WI-FI and Bluetooth stereo system, while leaving intact all the signs that witness its changes over time:
- a thirteenth century pointed-arch portal,
- tuff masonry “cooked” by the fumes and vapours of an ancient caciolaio, (cave for making cheese)
- original floor in terracotta tiles, traces of a niche/oven of the kitchen originally obtained in the wall.
A “little bridge” under which Jesus transited with the cross, amongst a noisy crowd, in the reconstruction by Mel Gibson in “The Passion” (2003).
Interaction with guests
The breakfast, included in room rate, is served in a café nearby. Inside the B&B guests can find a Nespresso coffee machine and a kettle.
