First and foremost, Valerie and Frederic were warm, attentive and caring hosts who went above and beyond to get me settled. The night of my arrival, Valerie had stocked the refrigerator with bread, cheese, yogurt, (and two beers!) to get me through my first couple of days in Martinique. Since it was my first time traveling internationally, I made quite a few mistakes, especially with the rental car! Valerie stayed in touch to help coordinate, and Frederic offered me rides and advice, rearranged his schedule and problem-solved for me in French with the staff at the rental car company. Every other day, Valerie checked in with me to answer questions and point me in the right direction. I speak some French and Valerie speaks some English. We were able to get along well with our high school language educations! Finally, I travelled as an out gay person, with both my hosts and various people I met along the way, with no problems.
The apartment is located in a quiet neighborhood of Fort de France and is built next to Valerie and Frederic's home, but separated by a kind of breezeway. I felt safe in the apartment and really appreciated having so much privacy. The photos truly and absolutely don't do the actual space justice. The apartment is spotless, beautifully constructed by Frederic, beautifully decorated, and with amazing attention to detail, I especially appreciated the lighting in the bathroom with both an overhead light and lighting on the vanity. The apartment is flooded with natural and indoor lighting, but equipped with black-out curtains in every room for the mornings you want to sleep in -- if you can ignore frog songs, with occasional goat/ cow/ rooster accompaniment. My favorite part of the apartment was the balcony overlooking the sugar cane fields. Every morning, I read for a couple of hours, enjoying the breeze and the view and was even able to catch the sunrise one morning.
Valerie and Frederic have only been hosting for a few months. I couldn't believe the value for the price! You should book this apartment before they come to their senses and charge what it's worth!
Thanks so much to both of you. . Vous allez receverez beaucoup plus que le monnaie que vous lui donnerez! Merci beaucoup!
