Malt Hill oceanside estate is on the Gold Coast of Cape Ann and sits on 25 acres with its own private beach and award-winning gardens. Stay in the historic carriage house's two-bedroom apartment and enjoy a private patio and grill, while also getting access to the property's pool, hot tub, and tennis courts. A quick 10 minute walk brings you to West Beach, and Gloucester, Salem, and Boston are a short train ride away.
Built in the 1800s, Malt Hill, perched on 25 acres of oceanfront land, is one of the last great Cape Ann Gold Coast estates. The Shell Grotto is one of three apartments in Malt Hill's carriage house, which was completely updated and renovated by my family. It's called the Shell Grotto because when we redid the walls, we created mosaics in the plaster using local shells. You can see some of our work in the photos.
Guests in the Shell Grotto share a driveway and parking with other carriage house guests, and also have shared use of the estate's pool, fire pit, hot tub, beach and tennis court.
Please note that in order to access the space, you must travel down a path with granite stairs that people with limited mobility may find challenging.
Interaction with guests
I live nearby and am only a phone call away. There are two property managers on site to help out, and my mom lives in the main house up the hill. She's often about and will probably say hi, if she isn't working.
Other things to note
We live on site at the top of the hill (you can't see the house from the carriage house), so you'll often see us coming and going but you don't need to interact unless you want to.
- If you decide to stay with us, you will be required to sign an additional guest policies and waiver document
- Pet parents: there is an additional $250 pet fee
- No lifeguard--swim at your own risk
- No dogs over 30 pounds
- This is one of three carriage house units. Respect your fellow guests!
- Take only pictures, leave only footprints
- Quiet time after 10 PM and before 7 AM
- Parking is shared; no guests or visitors may block others from entering or exiting
From Sep 05, 2017 - Jun 01, 2018 the minimum stay is 90 nights.

Hi! I was lucky enough to grow up at Malt Hill with my mom (she's in my profile picture with me). My mom is busy running a successful company and keeping Malt Hill beautiful--she and I both love gardening--so I help her with guests. I'm a marine biologist and fell in love with the ocean as a kid. Now I do most of my work with the shrimp industry in the Gulf of Mexico. If you stay with us you'll meet Skittles, the best dog ever, who I rescued from New Orleans after Katrina.
