Canonbie sits in the “Debateable Lands”; a considerable expanse of land neither under the rule of the Scots nor the English, thus becoming a refuge for all the outlaws in the region.
Liddesdale and the land around Canonbie was the territory of the infamous Armstrong Clan, which had the reputation of being the wildest of all the riding families on both sides of the Border.
There was also a priory at Canonbie, destroyed by the English in 1542. The stones were used in the building of Canonbie Bridge. A mound can still be seen on its former site.
