Everywhere are lovely kilim rugs and pieces brought back from the owners' travels – fine old wooden chests, antique wardrobes, contemporary art and books.

Guest access

The beauty of the house is that it is big and very spacious. There are 8 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 kitchens, an office with wireless internet and 3 big terraces. So everyone can have their own privacy, even if you are 14 and up to 16 guests.

The house is on 2 floors, so if you so wish you will be able to have two separate entrances. You will be together but still each have your privacy and autonomy. You can even have separate kitchens.

And if you are only 5 or 6, it also works. But then depending on the number of bedrooms you wish, you will occupy only part of the house- the upper or lower part. But there is no sharing with other guests, other than the host rom time to time.
If you are using only 6 bedrooms or less, access will be limited to two terrasses.

Interaction with guests

I interact a lot with my guests to prepare for their stay and answer their questions.
I will not necessarily be on the premises but the superintendent will be there. On the premises when I am not there, I have a great super who has been taking care of the house for the past 20 years. I am very computer savvy so I am always reachable by mail/SMS.
The house has been featured in TF!-du cote de chez view. Watch the video called : Du côté de chez vous, bastide perchée du 8 janvier 2017. Here is the link, but it might not work, if you are out of France: (URL HIDDEN)

Here are some testimonials of guests who have stayed:
Jo Jenkin (UK): 12 People, May 2014
"Our Party of 12 adults spent a wonderful 10 days at la Bastide d'Esparon. Everyone was delighted with the house, the restoration, furnishings and lovingly placed artefacts.
The property is clean and well maintained and the caretaker very helpful. The whole place has a very special ambiance and every day started and ended with very convivial breakfasts and dinners on the terraces or around the table in the living room. The house is in a superb location with stunning views and although it is quite a steep road to reach it, the road was always empty and it was never a problem.
We walked every day, both from the house and on the GR's within a 25 km radius. There are some classic walks, spectacular views and lovely villages.
It was a very happy stay in a very special place."

Arielle de Gasquet (France), July 2013. 6 People.
"Maison avec beaucoup de charme et une vue exceptionnelle, dans un hameau typique. Calme absolu, belles promenades et baignades dans les rivières."

Paul Sara (USA), June 2013. 9 people.
"Martine is an amazing host. It is magnificently decorated with objects from around the world, art pieces which range from abstract to picturesque, and is abundant in plants and vines. There are multiple terraces with fireplaces and bbqs, and the rooms are very cozy and charming. The food of the region is exquisite as well. The weather is warm but not humid during the day and the night is fresh so you can get that perfect sleep. The view on the valley and the stars at night are breathtaking. The village is quiet but far from being lifeless. It is a great pad to visit other parts of the region and to come back to in the evening. There are rivers and canyons at proximity to the house which are beautiful and refreshing. I could not recommend this place more; my stay there has been excellent, relaxing and therapeutic."

Other things to note

All my guests always say the house is magical. They all want to come back. There are hardly any cars in the hamlet. It is like being back in another time. With its breathtaking views from every where on the sky and the hamlet and the soft Cevennes mountains, airy but colorful and contemporary decoration.

It is an old stone house but with very high ceilings and full of light and the walls are all white (with paintings and art on them-but not too much!).

La Bastide has a magic to it, in a very well restored and refined atmosphere, with high ceilings, white walls, and a great feeling of luminousness. Some say it was the location of the old Merovingian castle. The house still has old sinks, carved stones, vaulted ceilings, which attest to its past history.

In the summer, there are many rivers to go to for great swimming, beautiful water and no one along the river:
1/ 10 minutes away where you can go and swim.
The nearest is at Breau, easy trail to get to. Great for kids.
Another one is au Coudoulous, great in the morning.
2/ 20 minutes away: L'Arre: At ganges in the direction of Saint-Laurent du Minier.
3/30 minutes away: Le Cirque de Navacelles. A spectacular canyon with miles of river, where you can picnic and walk on trails.
4/ 30 minutes away: Laroque. Canoe-kayak. for half a day or a whole day, you can go canoeing in the easy gorges of L'Herault.
5/2 hours away. Near Montpellier, the beaches of the Mediterranean. You can go for the day and bathe in the Mediterranean.

The furnishings and lovingly placed artefacts are refined and well maintained so I would ask the guests to honour them.

This authentic Cevenol House has a very distinct charm as it allies traditional antiques from my family and the Brocantes in the region as well as contemporary objects and artefacts acquired during my numerous travels.

I would ask you to water the garden and all my beautiful Uzes pots every evening in hot weather., as I love to do every other evening during the hot summer days.

I would love it if you could treat my home with care and respect for the Art and antiques and please love it like your own home.

We stayed 4 nights in the beautiful village Esparon and had a wonderful time at Martine's Bastide. The location of the house is beautiful, the surroundings fantastic. Communication went smoothly, Martine is very flexible. I would definitely recommend people to visit the Cevennes (great for cycling, also for walking) and stay at Martine's place. The house is gigantic and has lots of original rooms. We cooked all nights in the well equipped kitchen. Superb airbnb location!

Response from Martine:
Pieter, I am very impressed by your cycling in the Cevennes all the way to the Mont Aigual and on the high plateaux of Les Causses. I usually hike and the views are really 360 degree. You were great guests, all 14 cyclists. Come back. So happy you enjoyed La Bastide d'Esparon. Best, Martine

We stayed as a group of 13 people at Martine's house in Esparon. We loved the place and spent a fantastic week at Great Old Bastide! The house is very well equipped (especially the kitchen had everything required) and we enjoyed most the 3 different teracces. A big plus were the big tables in and outside the house, as we hardly found that in other advertisments as well as the canvas chairs. Esparon is a great place to be, relax and just enjoy nature and its surroundings. Martine and Samir were really helpful with every question and demanding we had. Just be concious of the street going up, as it is actually really narrow (but we managed to get up with a VW Bus :)). Thank you very much for everything Martine!

I held a painting retreat at Bastide d'Esparon with 7 artists attending - 11 of us all in all. The property and surrounding landscape is perfect for landscape painting and the house lends itself to big meals - we had breakfast and dinner in the dining area inside and lunch outside in the internal courtyard under the blue sky. Everybody loved the house and the views from the terrace - a wonderful painting spot and also where we had our evening drinks before dinner. The kitchen is big enough to cater for a large group in. And it was a joy to fill the house and run the painting week there. Martine has been answering ALL my questions via email and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) since I first found the house on air B and B - over 6 months ago - she had been wonderfully helpful and I hope I can hold another event at Bastide d'Esparon - also I hope to visit her in New York and feel I have made a friend - I have had a great sense of community - during out stay I was sending Martine photos via email and it was very nice to be I. Contact in this way - she also gave me local tips and advice on where to go and what is nice to visit locally. Thank you Martine! ❤️

I am a fine art photographer. I like spaces and colors. I was born in Paris, France and presently live in New York.
I live in 2 houses which are my havens and which I rent.
When I am not in my house in The Bronx from which I work, I am in my house in the South of France.
The house in the South of France is a family house where i have spent my summers since I was 5. I am a photographer working in New York. This has been my country house where I have spent many summers and it is a perfect contrast from the city life. I like the perfect calm and the luminous space I have in this house with the great views on the rolling hills and the light on the mountains of the Cevennes and the high plateaux of the Causses.
This house is my sanctuary.
I love the evenings watching the sunset with a glass of rose on the southern terrace, going to the rivers with a picnic, hiking in the mountains.
