Nothing revives your spirit more than fresh air, a lovely view, peace and quiet, and miles of countryside at your disposal. Our hillside retreat is situated high on the Ardèche plateau overlooking the meandering Rhône river and the distant Vercors.
This independent apartment (one of two) in our home has a good-sized bedroom/living room, a small independent kitchen, and a separate bathroom. It is located on the garden floor of a remodeled former summer school dormitory, in the middle of the green part of the Ardèche region. The 180 degree view of the Rhône valley, the Vercors mountains and the Alps is magnificent from the shared garden in front of the apartment.
France is criss-crossed with what they call "Grandes Randonnées," miles and miles of marked walking, hiking and biking trails. One of these, GR42a, passes on the edge of the property. In one direction is a one-hour hike down to St. Jean de Muzols. In the other is a stretch in every direction of wooded and cultivated green nature.
The atmosphere is remarkably serene upon arrival. Yet shopping can be found at 8 minutes by car, and bustling Valence is 40 minutes away. Lyon is one hour to the north.
The Ardèche is one of the hidden gems of France. Most of the department is located on the top of a plateau, high above the Rhône river valley. The local people are independent and self-reliant, and they have preserved the best of nature for your enjoyment. With advanced notice, your hosts can offer you the occasional meal or breakfast.
For local sightseeing, visit the Valrhôna chocolate factory, makers of the the favorite chocolate of top chefs around the world. Also, visit the Rhône Valley wineries, AOCs like Cornas, Hermitage, St. Joseph. Down the side valley stop in at the Mastrou, a historical steam-engine train that takes you up into the quaint hills-and-dales of the inner Ardèche, ending in Lamastre. Or you can ride on the Velorail, foot-pendaled carts on the same train tracks, winding through the "Gorges du Doux" river valley–lovely scenery and a good family outing. We also recommend the "Château de Crussol," a medieval ruin situated high above Valence with a magnificent view of the Vercors.
Last but not least, a branch of the ViaRhôna bike trail passes through Tournon-sur-Rhône, next door. This Geneva-to-the-Mediterranean path is partially completed. Sections from Geneva to Lyon are finished.
Hiking, biking, swimming in the local river or a municipal pool, visits to the Gorges de l'Ardèche and the upper plateau, Valrhôna Chocolaterie, Rhône wineries, the Mastrou steam train are all very close by. About 30 km away, the Chateau de Crussol, an old medieval ruin high above Valence.
