My place is close to the city center, public transport, street food and art and culture. You’ll love my place because of the location. My place is good for couples and solo adventurers.

The space

SINKEH is a guesthouse located in the heart of George Town, Penang, that supports culture and the arts.

We offer 9 en-suite rooms in a 19th century Straits Chinese house, re-imagined by award-winning Malaysian architect Lillian Tay. The traditional open plan with its quintessential courtyard ensures ample ventilation and allows for easy social interaction. The modern rooms on the other hand, are compact and provide privacy. Like the rooms, many aspects of the house are contemporary, but the past is never far away. The walls, timber beams, building layout, views of the city and our name, link us to history and heritage.

Our name SINKEH means "newcomer" in Hokkien - a commonly used Chinese dialect in Penang. The sinkeh were Chinese immigrants who came to Penang in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Comprising traders, craftsmen and coolies, they formed part of the vibrant mix of communities that made up the population of this colonial trading post.

We love the arts at SINKEH. Performances, rehearsals, lectures and discussions are regular occurrences in the studio. Should you see and hear things that excite your senses, rest assured they are merely the creative expressions of artists who pass through.

Guest access

Guests have access to a common lounge area where they can hangout, and help themselves to coffee or tea. There is a reading room for a quiet retreat, and the courtyard which is open to the public, is where guests can have friends over.

Interaction with guests

There will be staff in the house during the day to check guests in and to handle questions. If you will be arriving after 6pm, please let us know so we can arrange for someone to meet you.

Other things to note

No wifi in the room. Wifi available in public access areas only.

Our guesthouse is not suitable for children aged 12 and below.

The room is bright in the morning. If you like to sleep in, please bring along an eye-mask.

If you have allergies, please take note that walls are coated with a layer of lime-wash in compliance with heritage guidelines and are hence, powdery.

We have a dog in the house. Her name is Luna.

Sek Thim's place is artsy, the building and furniture are full of character. We enjoyed every bit of this accommodation, it was close to transportation (although we mainly used Uber, because the price is very reasonable there) otherwise the free shuttle bus stop is only footsteps away. Many eateries are around during the day and night stalls are just around the corner as well. It is close to one of the "must visit" Armenian street. Filtered water are also available in the common area which is a nice spot to hang out too. We enjoyed every bit of the accomomdation and will definitely return when we are in Penang next.

If you're looking for an oasis in the heart of Georgetown, look no further than Sinkeh. From the moment you step through their doors, you'll immediately feel a sense of tranquility and calm on the premises. The guesthouse is charming and rustic yet modern, with accents of industrial minimalist architecture blended throughout the property. The room I stayed in was spacious, lots of natural light allowed in by large glass panes, comfortable bedding and above all, immaculately clean. There are many common areas such as the garden downstairs, the study and rooftop patio, and I found myself relaxing in these spaces and enjoying my stay even more. Sinkeh is located in a very convenient location, with plenty of food options available on Lebuh Carnavon, Lebuh Kimberley, Beach Street - all of which are within a 1km radius. Sek Thim is a very kind and communicative host, he's happy to help and is very accommodating. I couldn't recommend this place enough. As a Georgetown native, I'm proud to call Sinkeh a true reflection of the town's vigorous artistic spirit.

Sek Thim's place is as advertised. Chic & central all packaged into a charming heritage home. Worth mentioning that the natural light flowing into the room in the morning is a lovely touch. In short - nice!

I work in the theatre as a director. Good meals with friends, gardening and listening to stories are things I enjoy. We are a friendly bunch here at Sinkeh, my team and I. We try to maintain a space that's peaceful and calm; one that encourages people to rest, to be at ease and relaxed.
