La Talante is an authentic farmhouse converted into a prime villa offering a genuine opportunity to experience the Tuscan countryside and step into local life. This home is ideal if you want to enjoy a relaxed stay, exploring and discovering an Italian version of everyday life at home.
The position of the house encourages touring as well, with immediate access to this exceptional countryside and its vast choices for sampling the food, wine, history, art and culture. This is a country house for those who want to truly slow down and enjoy life whenever they are at home and wherever they go exploring.

Thousands of strong, purposeful farmhouses scatter the Tuscan countryside, most not as old or interesting as La Talante, which was built over 500 hundred years ago. La Talante has a bit of poetry about it and is well-situated for a modern villa vacation. La Talante is also characteristic of so many homes across this landscape, settled as they are on the land from which the original occupants made a living; farming, herding and otherwise literally producing the necessities of life. The building design allowed for the animals to live downstairs and the people above. The rising heat made characteristically efficient and frugal use of the close living quarters. Direct access via an outdoor staircase for the humans ensured there were no pigs in the blankets.
Tuscany's justly famous agricultural heritage took shape during this period, and while life was hard, it was by definition bound up in many of the essential elements we crave today; a close-knit community and a sense of purpose and place.

The atmosphere of this age lives on at La Talante, while the improvements and updates of the current owner have created an appealing setting for a Tuscan villa vacation. La Talante offers the same escape for visiting guests that it does for the owners, a Roman family arriving to reclaim deep relaxation and the pleasure of sharing a beautiful place with family and friends. A home such as La Talante makes this possible through a subtle combination of old and new, service and independence. The kitchen is set with large baskets of fresh produce -- full of color and allure and from the garden in season. The table under the pergola is spacious enough for the four hour lunch that evolves naturally into the beguiling siesta of Stealing Beauty. The atmosphere is natural and unforced. The spaces intimate and inviting. Here is an accessible bit of charmed bucolic life and landscape.

La Talante stands just off an intentionally rough looking but blessedly short dirt road, easily accessible from a paved road and close to San Casciano dei Bagni. The setting is wooded hillside, green and cooling. The house is minutes from town, where you can experience traditional village life. The shops are specialized -- for meat, bread or fruit and vegetables, and you can enjoy the pleasure of buying locally. In addition, the town has several restaurants each distinctive in their own way. The local spa is of ancient Roman origins reborn as a luxe destination for pampering and rejuvenation. A superb gelato is sold at the Bar Centrale. The Pizzeria and the house wares shop are chic and fun. There are other nearby towns to explore, plus all the seasonal festivals and morning markets. You can easily fill a week with excursions to destinations near and far, pursuing cultural understanding and pure enjoyment at the same time. Wine and food are integral to daily life here and they are available with exceptional range and quality.

There are only two other homes on the road of La Talante, with so much space between you will not see or hear either from the private hillside the property occupies. A pronounced outcropping of land permitted construction of the stone house with its varied facade, with the woods pushed back to create the necessary small farm. Today a small olive grove, vineyard and vegetable garden remain a part of the estate. These features are arranged around the house and provide for an appealing aesthetic. A well-tended lawn extends to the west for playing ball or reading with a drink in hand, or simply contemplating the sky as it changes color in the evening.

To this has been added a lovely heated pool (10 x 4 meters, from 90cm to 180cm deep) with a lovely stone waterfall surrounded by a large apron of cotta tile. This is set on an upper terrace behind the house and reached up a rudimentary staircase, giving a view of Lago di Trasimeno to the east and the opening countryside to the west. The owners have recently rebuilt a large shady pergola and furnished it with beds and chairs for relaxation.

The road continues up into the woods, eventually reaching another neighbor and then curving down again towards San Casciano di Bagni. Walkers, runners and wanderers are encouraged to make a loop, heading in either direction and eventually returning to La Talante having enjoyed diverse woodlands, groves and open panorama meeting little or no traffic. La Talante is both accessible and removed.

Other things to note

The housekeeper can come for daily cleaning (except Sundays and national holidays) at an extra hourly cost.

We do have a cook that can come to prepare typical Tuscan meals at the house (needs to be booked in advance).

Martino was an excellent host. He responded more than quickly to every of our questions and took care of us during our stay. The house is located outside the little village and is a very private and silent place to stay.

Martino is by far one of the best hosts I've ever dealt with. His knowledge and willingness to help surpassed my expectations completely. The villa was perfect for a quiet, relaxing and wine / ham or cheese fuelled weekend with my family. Some recommendations too whilst you're there - get the chef to come in and cook for you (Eleonora) Authentic Italian home cooking and loads left over! Villa is an authentic farmhouse - beautiful inside and out. we even saw some of the local deer grazing nearby. Host 10/10, villa 10/10
