Environmentally friendly, handmade, mudbrick & stone, self contained cottage. An architectural gem, in a bush setting with orchards, gardens, on the Kalang river. Private, artistic, luxury, minutes from the vibrant culture of Bellingen. Choice of beds, the loft or on the ground floor, with 100% cotton sheets, luxury spa, spacious bathroom, full gourmet eat-in kitchen, BBQ and brassier. Great selection of books, games, movies and music, all the comforts of a real home. Bird lovers paradise.

The space

This hand built mud-brick and stone studio cottage is an inspirational space, flooded with natural light, enhanced by the the warmth of the earth bricks and the beauty of the local stone. Designed thoughtfully and with sensitivity by an award winning environmentally conscious designer.
The space takes full advantage of the setting and makes the most of the local climate.
The studio is set up with a couple in mind, though there is enough room for 4 people with 2 queen beds, it is not suitable for children due to the ladder to the loft bedroom. Both beds are really comfortable queen size beds, always with 100% cotton sheets laundered with low scent eco friendly products. The loft bed has views of the tree tops and the alternative to using the ladder and the summer choice is the comfy day bed on the ground floor also a full size queen bed with a large view of the night sky to send you off to sleep.
This quirky, open planned space is furnished for beauty and comfort with all the comforts of a home. Enjoy the visuals of art by local artists and laze on the inside or the outside lounge, in the comfort of the cushion filled day bed, all bathed in the mid winter sun. The huge north facing windows bring the out side in and encourage you to gaze out at the green of natural world or study the star filled night skies in this special valley.

The loft with ladder is not suitable for children, less able adults and elderly people, so we restrict our bookings to adults only and ask guests to consider carefully their own needs and request the appropriate bedding choice when booking the studio space. So if you feel you can't manage the ladder access (see photos) let us know and we will make up the queen size day bed on the main/ground floor level, the ground floor bed is the better choice for the summer months in Bellingen.
The large bathroom also with northern aspect has plenty of space, a spa bath for relaxing in and plenty of solar hot water with a gas booster for cloudy weather.

Sit and chill on the cool southern verandah, or relax and cook outside by the brassier on the northern veranda and truly be on holidays. Get creative and utilize the large outside space that can be set up for work in ceramics or with an easel if you prefer to paint.
The main house on the property, further down the driveway is far enough away for your privacy and close enough if you are in need of anything or would just like a chat. Mobile coverage is limited in many areas in the Bellingen shire including our place but there is internet available in the studio and the house land-line number can be used for any urgent contact needed (we will give you the number before you arrive).
We do not cater for pets, as there is no fencing on the property and we value our abundant bird life on the property.

Guest access

There is a flat screen television and DVD player with a selection of DVD's and movies and a CD player with a selection of music for your entertainment. There is a small library and a selection of games. The kitchen is fully equipped for those that enjoy cooking, a gas cooking stove, an outside BBQ, a full size fridge and the pantry is lightly stocked for your convenience. There is plenty of solar hot water with a gas booster so it won't run out on you and gas heating for chilly evenings. Sheets (100%cotton), towels, bodywash and shampoo are all supplied and there is a washing machine for your use.

Interaction with guests

We aim to be warm and friendly hosts, we can direct you to the local highlights of the area, let you know about local events and make sure you have all the comforts for a great stay.
We are always happy to have a chat and can offer a cuppa at the main house when time permits. We encourage you to pop over to the main house to say hello and goodbye, or to ask any questions you may have, especially if a catch up hasn't been possible during your stay. We will generally try to pop up when you arrive to say hello but sometimes it may be too late in the evening.

Other things to note

There is some essentials in the pantry, like teas, coffee (real stuff not instant), sugar ,honey, vegemite, spices, oil, vinegar, soy sauce etc. We also supply milk, yogurt, fruit and sometimes some home made goodies (usually gluten free) for breakfast on your first day, just encase you arrive late and didn't have time to shop. The supermarket in town is pretty good and is open till about 7.30pm.
There is a huge variety of birds to watch and hear, just from your verandah, so enjoy the sounds of nature especially in the morning.

Absolutely brilliant. Great value for a a great little hideaway. Well equipped kitchen, great spa and the loft makes me feel like I was sleeping in a tree house. Heaps of quirky arty decorations in the cabin and great selection of music and games. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Quiet location out of town (Bellingen). Unique character - studio, artwork, birdlife, nature - and a fabulous place to chill out. Bellingen the town is interesting and lives up to its reputation. Helen and Bruce provided breakfast supplies and other home comforts which we did not expect.

Helen and Bruce have created a magical and unique little sanctuary. The location is so peaceful and only within 10 min drive to Bellingen. Just the drive to get to their place is so stunning! The trees, the fields, the river, the hills: you have to pinch yourself before that much beauty! The place was well-equipped and perfectly clean and the style is so unique. The spa in the bathroom was the perfect way to relax and unwind after the day, the heater kept us warm and their selection of music was quite impressive. Waking up to the beautiful nature in the morning was quite an experience. It was truly the perfect little escape and gave us the peace and tranquility we were after. I would definitely go back!

We had such a lovely stay in a truly beautiful cottage! Everything was perfect and we really appreciate the little touches such as the coffee and tea, muffins and breakfast essentials when we arrived. Thanks once again for creating the perfect space for a "relax and unwind" kinda weekend.

Great little place in what feels like the middle of nowhere. So peaceful with everything you need.

What a great place to stay! About 10 mins drive out of Bellingen, lovely and serene, quite cold though so remember to pack warm clothes.

Helen & Bruce User ProfileHelen & Bruce is a superhost.

We are a happy couple who enjoy life, art and good company. We have lived in Bellingen for a long time, raised a family here and now enjoy sharing our place with all sorts of lovely people, we know and love the whole area very much.
As hosts we aim to be friendly, generous and achieve the balance of being available and respectful to our guests needs for interaction or privacy. Time permitting we love our visitors to come to our home for a cup of tea or a glass of wine and share a story or 2 during their stay.
