Christopher our host looks after this property for the owners and was quick to respond to my request to book at such short notice due to two previously unsuccessful bookings. One had been double booked - because three people had taken bookings for the same house without updating the calendar, so, having already bought flights, I was forced to find two alternatives to match the flight dates and limited remaining availability. One for 3 nights in Birgu (fantastic), the other on Gozo. The Gozo host informed me that there were neighbouring external building works to be aware of which could be disruptive and dusty. This was not conducive to the peaceful, relaxing experience I desperately needed.
The limited options at even shorter notice led me to Christopher who was sympathetic and helpful.
We noticed this house was connected by an archway to the main house which was locked up, but had the pool - only visible from the roof where the advertised photo was taken. The house itself was extremely bare with the absolute minimum of furnishings offering little in the way of comfort. Cosy isn't how I would describe it.
It was clean enough, though the stone floors needed a good sweep, and we had to empty the dishwasher on arrival. The kitchen was a good size, but with very limited facilities for cooking let alone entertaining. There was no provision of basic dish cleaning essentials eg. not a single dishwasher tablet or even bin bags (which we had to buy on day 1) - Christopher dropped some of his own personal supplies over when we informed him of this. It would have been good to know how refuse and recycling works too given that we had an 11 night stay.
The bed in the main bedroom was so uncomfortable that we woke every day with backache! You could hear the springs grinding as you turned over! The pillows, that we also used to sit on, on the hard wooden garden chairs had holes in them.. Though the bedding and towels were clean.
The poolside area was filthy, and the drains around it were blocked when we tried to sweep/wash the sediment, petals and leaves away - we unblocked them ourselves. The removable cream covers on the sunloungers (the most comfortable seating provided!!) had not been washed for a very long time. And the poolside lights could only be operated from the main house (locked up) so we were given a small floodlight to plug into an external socket providing minimal light. We bought lots of candles to compensate.
If there had been no pool access, this house would have been dark and claustrophobic.
Christopher was delightful and couldn't apologise enough for the issues we raised which the owners can rectify at minimal cost. We are pretty laid back people, others will be less so given what you get for the price by comparison.
This is certainly a house of character, but what it lacks is soul.
