The space

Mawarra Manor, heritage listed and built in 1932, is set on 3 acres and sleeps 8 in 4 exquisite bedrooms. The garden is recognised as the most famous surviving example by renowned garden designer Edna Walling.

Whilst both house and garden have undergone extensive restoration and modernisation their historic significance has always remained at the forefront of thinking.

The manor incorporates all traditional formal and informal rooms that one would expect in a home of this era. Extensive wood panelling, wall to wall carpets, gas central heating, evaporative cooling and tasteful lighting provide a luxurious ambience. The upper level comprises an entry hall, large bow-shaped formal lounge with open fire place, dining room, enormous enclosed balcony area overlooking the central staircase and garden, country kitchen with Miele appliances including 2 dishwashers, built-in refrigerator and built-in coffee machine, electric oven, gas hob, microwave and separate gas AGA oven and hotplates. The lounge is furnished with three comfortable 3-seater couches and a baby grand piano, TV and DVD player. The verandah dining room has an 8-seater dining table, chiffonier and drinks cabinet. A separate breakfast room leads from the kitchen. The upstairs bathroom features a rain shower head and a European laundry and separate toilet. French doors lead to an enormous avocado-shaped gas and solar-heated indoor swimming pool with games area and sauna. The pool area has separate heating and humidity control. It looks through floor to ceiling glass onto a deck with outdoor dining setting.

Upstairs is a king-sized 4-poster bed in one room and a queen-sized 4-poster bed in the other. Downstairs is bedroom 3 having a king-sized 4-poster bed and bedroom 4 having a queen-sized bed and ensuite bathroom. There is a separate toilet and central shower room off the hallway. Both bedrooms have separate entries from the garden. If required, there is a 5th single bedroom available for an additional fee.

The garden offers a pedigree like no other, the centrepiece being the sweeping stone staircase leading to the stunning octagonal reflecting pond at the bottom of the property, described by Edna Walling as "a symphony of steps and beautiful trees".

Beautiful vistas and rare plantings reflect the love that has been lavished on Mawarra over the years with many beautiful paths traversing the grounds quaintly known as "Garden Walk", "The Reclining Boy Walk", "Birch Walk" and "Cottage Walk". Wander through and find the old lawn tennis court, a cottage garden and an orchard/nursery highlighted by a model Tudor village.

You'll discover, discreetly tucked within the grounds, "Edna Walling Cottage". Built in 1936 and based on Princess Elizabeth and Margaret's life-sized dolls' house at Royal Lodge Scotland, "Edna Walling Cottage" is fully self-contained and perfect for a visit to the Yarra Ranges. NB the cottage is currently let.

Alan's Manor is stunning, and it is such a wonderful experience to be there. I certainly recommend for experiencing an era, and having a magical garden around you, with the local area being extremely accessible. The place was extremely clean, and had everything we needed. We had a minor issue checking in, but I got it resolved. Alan was good to communicate with in the lead up to the stay.

We did not get what was on the Airbnb website. The ad showed 4 bedrooms, 1 with a king size bed and three 3 with queen size beds. We were given 1 with a king size bed, 1 with a queen size bed and 1 with a single bed that is all. The house was dirty and full of spiders and spider webs in nearly every corner of the house. The bathroom had mould in it. The house was in disrepair as cornice was hanging from the ceiling and we fearful that it was going to fall on us. A tree growing in the roofs gutter and the garden wasn't maintained . The house leaked when it rained. The pool was dirty. There was no gym equipment but the ad said there was a gym and this was one of the reasons we booked the house. The house wasn't properly maintained and we did not get what was advertised. Would never go back again and have a family holiday almost destroyed like this one. Luckily l have a positive family that focused on the holiday and not the house we ended up with.

Response from Alan:
I think something else is going on here. 6 weeks before the booking, the guest was advised we would supply 3 rooms (one single room for free). Upon arrival the guest demanded 4 rooms (normally twice the cost charged). Upon being offered an additional room at 50% discount he said he was leaving. The remaining guests were fantastic and endured the storm that flooded 50% of properties in the Dandenog Ranges, including washing sand into the pool (which had been completely clean prior to the storm). Leeza left this message at the end of her stay, noting the pool had become "dirty", but said: "Thanks for everything. We had a wonderful time."

A period piece with lots of charm and character secluded but close to cute villages and not far to Melbourne. Beautiful dishes for festive meals and the breakfast room is a particular treat. Alan was responsive even on Christmas Day.

We love Federation, Edwardian homes and to have the privilege to stay in a home such as Mawarra, was an experience. Alan throughout the booking procedure was so helpful and accommodating. A quick message during our stay to see that all was well , was very appreciated. Sherbrooke is one of the most beautiful places to visit, so staying at Mawarra Manor makes the experience even more beautiful. Thank you Alan
