Self-contained one bedroom apartment with private entrance. Sleeps 3. Comfy Queen size bed and Single bed in master bedroom. Living room with a quality double sized sofa bed. Stunning views of the Kakanui mountains and Oamaru´s historic precinct. Secure. Peaceful. Private. Fully equipped kitchenette. Walk everywhere.

The space

The Retreat is a self-contained space on the ground floor of our family home on Avon Street.

Our home is not the Ritz as it is an older style property, but the location is! Nesting on the hill overlooking the Oamaru Harbour taking in stunning sea views, Avon View is conveniently located between the Yellow Eyed and Blue Penguin Colonies and only a short walk to the Historic Precinct, Steampunk HQ, I-Site, Cafés and Restaurants.

The Retreat has its own private entrance off a secluded BBQ area and a beautiful fairy tale garden with big native trees, tucked away reading nooks and quiet places to collect yourself and be at peace.

This listing is for our spacious Sunset Room – a lovingly renovated guest room with a supremely comfortable queen size bed. The Sunset room also has one single bed for an additional guest. You will have your own private bathroom, a separate toilet and a simple yet functional kitchenette (mini-fridge, microwave, oven, toaster, kettle, cooking utensils, spice rack, free coffee/tea).

Upon request and for a small surcharge of NZD 15 we can prepare the sofa bed in the living room.

Relax in our recently extended and renovated TV lounge with comfy couch and a big wooden dining table. We offer Sky TV (Satellite) with 5+ Sports Channels and have a selection of music and movies for you to choose from.

We have recently upgraded our heating system to include a heatpump, panel heaters and electric blankets (winter) so your stay will be as cosy as possible.

Guest access

Guests will have access to secure off-street parking.

The Retreat has its own private entrance via an external stairway. Guests will have access to a private sunny courtyard & garden shared by the friendly house owners.

Guests have sole access to Avon View Retreat. The place is for the exclusive use of YOU and rented ONLY to one party at a time.

The upper level of the house is not accessible to guests.
For guests who book the 1 bedroom apartment the other bedroom won´t be accessible.

Interaction with guests

While we like to meet our guests in passing, Avon View Retreat is very private and frequently guests come and go without seeing us.

We want our guests to feel welcome and comfortable in our home and are happy to share our local knowledge with you whether it is on Oamaru events, attractions or restaurants.

While the owners, Sue & Frank, work full time, Kristin can be reached on her phone at any time and is happy to assist you if you need her help.

Other things to note

This isn’t a hotel. It’s a cozy self-contained apartment for friendly people to enjoy a private but home-like experience.

While tea & coffee making facilities are provided, we are not a traditional 'Bed&Breakfast' with a breakfast offering but we can recommend that you head to Tees St. Cafe (10min walk) for all of your breakfast needs.

Beds INCLUDED in the room rate as follows:
Bookings for 2 people include the use of 1 Queen bed
Bookings for 3 incl 1 Queen bed and choice of 1 Single OR 1 Sofa bed
EXTRA BEDS:
If you require an additional or seperate bed(s) a surcharge applies: $15 per bed/per stay. Please note that we will not automatically prepare all beds so please let us know at the time of booking.

CHILDREN:
Our place is suited for children of all ages under the supervision of their parents. They may share one of the existing beds or use the single bed in our Sunset room or the sofa bed in the lounge room. We can also provide a cot bed for our youngest guests. A surcharge may apply so we recommend that you contact us BEFORE you make a booking.

CAT ON SITE:
Our old cat “Sparky” knows all our neighbours. In between chasing other cats and sea gulls he takes regular catnaps in the sunniest spots in our garden. He only comes home for a pat, a meal and the occasional sleepover by the fire in winter and only has access to the upstairs floor and not the Retreat.

MINIMUM STAY:
Please note that bookings during the summer season (December-April) may require a 2 night minimum.

IRON & IRONING BOARD:
can be provided upon request.

Kristin's place was very cosy and modern! We asked for an earlier check in and Kristin was kind enough to allow us to do that. Also Kristin was very helpful in recommending us places to go to and she even provided information on a sheet upon arrival. The place is very cosy and clean and super comfortable! I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to make it a stop as their road trip across NZ! :)

My family and I had a wonderful time staying here! We met Kristin's mother-in-law, who was extremely helpful with her suggestions about the best spots to see the yellow-eyed penguins. Thanks for everything, Kristin.

Stay here for one night with my parents. They both love it very much. Very comfy house, warm and clean. The kitchen, living room and shower room is well equipped too. The view from the house is nice. I specially like the design in the dining area, colorful and lovely. Furthermore Kristin provide a lot useful information about what to do in Oamaru and nearby too. Highly recommended!

Sue User Profile

I´m Sue, your host at Avon View Retreat.

I love my hometown and sharing it with others. I genuinely enjoy people from all walks of life. Everyone has a story.

I enjoy a wide variety of interests: photography, yoga, cooking, music, the arts. With my husband Frank I share a love of gardening, tramping, cycling and travelling.

Growing up in Oamaru, I have was always drawn to Tourism, firstly through running a Holidaystay on the banks of the Waitaki River with my husband Frank which gave us a taster of local Rural Tourism and secondly working at the Oamaru i-site where I gained huge experience and insight into NZ Tourism. As part of the job I was privileged to travel to many parts of the South Island experiencing varied activities, e.g. AJ Hackett Bungey in Queenstown, swimming with the dolphins in Kaikoura, whitewater rafting on the Rangitata River, cruising the Doubtful Sound. I have experienced staying in a broad range of accommodation, including Backpackers, Baches, Camping grounds, B&B’s, Motels and 5 star Hotels throughout NZ. I believe Oamaru is a gem, a special town.

The Airbnb is located on the ground floor of a typical Kiwi family home Once our three teenage children left home, it was time for a new chapter. Along with our eldest son Joel and his partner Kristin we refurbished and redecorated the former teenage rooms into guest rooms and an old laundry room into a kitchenette. Many working hours were dedicated towards the transformation and we poured all of our hearts and souls into this project. It has since been a great adventure and we love sharing our home with all you holiday makers from around the world!

Please send us a message any time if you would like to ask any questions or make a booking.
Yours sincerely
Sue and Frank
