About this listing

Dolan Springs is the gateway to the Grand Canyon Skywalk & this custom rock home is located in the largest Joshua Tree forest in the world. Beautiful high desert scenery & great stargazing in this remote area!
A smaller, quaint & unique home on a 1 acre property.
A portion of the home's electricity comes from wind power through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs.)
There is now purified water on the kitchen faucet so it is not necessary to buy water unless you wish to do so.

The space

This space can accommodate up to 5 people. There is a queen bed in the bedroom. The living room has a futon couch that lays out into a full bed with a twin loft bed above it.
I built this custom rock house myself using local rocks that I collected in the area.
Please write down the directions in advance. A guest using GPS could not find the house.
Pets may be allowed, but there is an additional fee of $20. There have been problems several times with animal hair on the couch & bedding that is difficult & time-consuming to remove. Please let me know in advance if you are bringing a pet so I can cover the couch & put out different bedding.
Please note that my listing states that the home is handicapped accessible. I need to clarify that the inside of the home has adequate space for a wheelchair to get around, but the toilet does not have any grab bars so this may be something you need to bring if this applies to you. Also, the driveway is dirt & there is a small step up to enter the house so a handicapped person would probably need assistance to get into the house. I plan to add a ramp to the front door, but am not sure at this time exactly when that will be installed.

Guest access

The fireplace adds ambience to my rustic home. Please follow the instructions & do not leave the fire unattended.
There is a full kitchen with cookware & a coffeemaker. Coffee, basic spices, & condiments are available for your use. A water filter pitcher is in the fridge. Additional filtered water can be obtained at the well across the street for $.25. Basic toiletries & towels are also included.
High speed internet & satellite TV are available. Some books & magazines are also there for your use. There are also some games available on the shelf in the bathroom as well.
There is a back porch with a table & chairs for getting some fresh air or if you are a smoker. There is also a firepit in the backyard with firewood included. The only rule is that you keep the fire small enough that no one calls the fire department and the fire needs to be extinguished before you leave the area. Please do not have an outdoor fire if it is windy or very hot. Non-potable water is available for this purpose in trash cans at the back corner of the house & any jugs under the shelf next to the stove in the kitchen. There is also a water hose behind those trash cans at the back corner of the house.

Interaction with guests

I will not be present during your stay although I may need to pick up the trash & haul water if you are staying more than a week. A representative or myself will be available if you have any questions. I also am offering an optional tour of the nearby Native-American petroglyphs only known to locals. The fee for this is $20. per group. However, if your stay is a week or longer, the tour will be included for only $10. Please request this in advance so I can make sure someone is available. Special tours of other unique local attractions such as old mines or ghost towns may be available with reservations 2 weeks in advance.

Other things to note

Occasionally, guests with pets visit. This does not happen very often, but if you are allergic to animals, you may want to have allergy medicine on hand.

Nice space for a great secluded spot with spectacular views of Arizona.

Unfortunately not the nicest place to stay. There was a swarm of insects at the entrance door. We also found dead insects inside. Kitchen and bathroom more or less ok. Surprised to see 4 guarding dogs in the garden the morning after.

Response from Michelle:
When an outside light is left on & it is after dark, of course there will be moths around it certain times of the year. No one has ever commented on this before. I spray for insects around the doors so sometimes, I will find dead insects near the doors. They die after walking through the poison. This is usually not a big problem, but after it rains especially in the summer, they seem to try to get into the air conditioned space. Spraying periodically is the only thing I can do to try to prevent this. I am sorry everything did not meet your expectations!

This location is perfect if you plan on doing the Grand Canyon West. My friend and I arrived after visiting the Hoover Dam, and it was an easy drive. The directions that Michelle gives you are very helpful so make sure to follow them! The window units work wonderfully. One of us was in the bedroom and the other on the top bunk and both of us stayed very cool. The house has all the tools you need to make a simple meal, along with some ingredients. The store in town, Double D, has some things but it's more of a convenient store than a grocery so you would be better off getting what you need before you reach Dolan Springs. The view is unbeatable. We watched the sunset over the mountains and it was breathtaking. 10/10 do recommend to anyone!

We spent two days in this house. It is interesting experience to sleep there. You can see rabints jumping around house. If you look in the night sky the view is magnificent.

Though we only stayed for a short time, the house was very comfortable and very scenic, surrounded by all the Joshua trees. Would highly recommend!
